Background

Markus Hottenrott is a Managing Director and the Chief Investment Officer of Morgan Stanley Infrastructure Partners (MSIP), the dedicated private infrastructure investing arm of Morgan Stanley Investment Management. He has been part of MSIP since its inception (the platform was founded in 2006) and has spent more than two decades with Morgan Stanley across its investment banking and investment management businesses.

Before helping build MSIP, Hottenrott co-headed Morgan Stanley's European transportation and infrastructure industry group within the Investment Banking Division, where he specialized in privatizations and structured finance transactions across Europe and the Middle East. Earlier, in the firm's German office, he concentrated on the public transportation and infrastructure sectors — experience that underpins MSIP's focus on regulated and essential-service assets.

Hottenrott has a legal background rather than a traditional finance-only one. He studied law at the universities of Heidelberg, Dresden, and Munich, and wrote his doctoral dissertation in law at Humboldt University in Berlin. He is a frequent speaker at institutional infrastructure conferences (e.g., IPE's Iceland real-assets event) and has served on portfolio-company boards, including a directorship at VTG, the European rail-wagon leasing group.

Under his leadership as CIO, MSIP has grown into a globally diversified platform with roughly $18 billion in assets under management since inception and a portfolio of more than 40 investments spanning transport, digital infrastructure, energy transition, and utilities. In March 2025, the team closed its fourth flagship vehicle, North Haven Infrastructure Partners IV (NHIP IV), at $4.1 billion.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Essential, hard-asset infrastructure only. MSIP invests in businesses that own or operate critical physical infrastructure — the kind with high barriers to entry, inelastic demand, and long-duration, often contracted or regulated, cash flows. This is buyout/control-style investing, not venture or seed.
  • Core sectors: transportation (rail, ports, ferries, pipelines), digital infrastructure (data centers and fiber), energy transition, and utilities. Recent deal flow has tilted heavily toward digital infrastructure and energy.
  • Value-add approach. MSIP has historically pursued a "value-add" strategy — acquiring good assets and actively improving operations, capital structure, and growth rather than relying purely on yield.
  • Global mandate, long-term horizon. The team invests across Europe, North America, and Asia-Pacific and positions itself as a long-hold, operationally engaged owner rather than a short-term financial buyer.
  • Large-cap checks. Deployment comes from multi-billion-dollar funds, so equity commitments are large (typically nine figures) and target mature enterprises, not startups.

Notable Investments

  • Epic Energy (Australia) — Agreed acquisition (announced 2025/2026) of the operator of the Moomba-to-Adelaide Pipeline System (MAPS); expected to close in H2 2026.
  • UltraEdge (France) — 2024/2025 partnership with Altice France to create a nationwide independent distributed colocation provider from a portfolio of 257 data centers interconnected over SFR's fiber network.
  • StraitNZ (New Zealand) — Acquisition of StraitNZ Holdings, a ferry and freight-logistics operator running services across the Cook Strait.
  • Red Oak Power (USA) — MSIP agreed to sell the Red Oak power generation facility (a realization/exit within the portfolio).
  • VTG AG (Germany) — European rail-wagon leasing company where Hottenrott has served as a board director.
