Background
Martin Lavallée is a Vice President on Novacap's Industries investment team, based in Montreal. He joined Novacap — one of Canada's oldest and largest private equity firms, founded in 1981 — in 2007, and brings more than 30 years of experience in business valuation, corporate finance and investment banking. Novacap partners with mid-market and lower-middle-market companies across four verticals (Technologies, Digital Infrastructure, Industries and Financial Services) and manages over US$12 billion in assets from offices in Montreal, Toronto and New York.
Before Novacap, Lavallée was an Associate-Director at the head office of Bell Canada (BCE), where he held roles across corporate finance, mergers & acquisitions and risk management. Earlier in his career he worked in the insurance industry at Guarantee Insurance, holding a risk-management position in the surety/bonding department.
He holds a Bachelor of Business Administration (B.A.A.) in Finance and Economics from HEC Montréal and a Master of Science in Administration (M.Sc.) from the Université de Sherbrooke. He is a Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA, formerly CGA) and a member of the Ordre des comptables professionnels agréés du Québec, as well as a CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) charterholder.
At Novacap, Lavallée is active on portfolio boards. He currently sits on the board of Pipp Mobile Storage Systems and serves as a board observer for Joseph Ribkoff and Groupe Forget. He has previously served on or observed the boards of the Laces Group, Noble Foods, Greenwood Mushrooms, Smyth Companies, Multibar/Multy Home, and others.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests through Novacap's Industries funds (e.g., NOVACAP Industries IV) — partial or full buyouts, growth capital, recapitalizations, spin-offs and take-privates rather than early-stage/seed venture.
- Targets established, cash-generative mid-market industrial and consumer companies — Novacap's buyout mandate reaches up to roughly US$100M EBITDA and ~US$1.0B enterprise value.
- Sector emphasis within Industries: manufacturing, distribution, building materials, food, furniture, packaging, business services and transportation.
- Backs founder- and family-owned businesses looking for a partner to institutionalize, professionalize and scale — Novacap positions itself as partnering "with visionary entrepreneurs."
- Applies a finance/valuation-driven, hands-on governance approach, reflecting Lavallée's CPA/CFA background and active board involvement in portfolio companies.
Notable Investments
- Joseph Ribkoff — Canadian fashion/apparel designer; Novacap acquired a majority stake in May 2024 via NOVACAP Industries IV (with Fonds de solidarité FTQ and the founder/management). Lavallée is a board observer.
