Martin Paul

Martin Paul was born in 1958 in Sankt Ingbert, Saarland, Germany. He studied human medicine at Heidelberg University from 1978 to 1985 and earned his doctorate there, training as a specialist in clinical pharmacology and hypertension. Early in his research career he led a group under Detlev Ganten at the Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine in Berlin-Buch, and he has since authored more than 200 (by some accounts over 300) peer-reviewed publications in cardiovascular pharmacology and molecular medicine.

From 1995 he was Full Professor of Clinical Pharmacology at Freie Universität Berlin's Benjamin Franklin Medical Center, directing the Institute of Clinical Pharmacology and Toxicology (1997–2008) and serving as Dean of the Medical Faculty (from 1997) and, from 2004 to 2008, as Vice President on the board of the Charité medical center. In 2008 he moved to the Netherlands as Dean of the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences at Maastricht University.

On 1 May 2011 Paul became President of Maastricht University, succeeding Jo Ritzen, and was reappointed for a second term. During his decade there he was widely credited with strengthening the Maastricht/Limburg knowledge economy — including the Brightlands campus ecosystem — helping attract international students, researchers, and start-ups to the region. He left Maastricht in 2021 and, on 1 November 2021, took office as Rector of Ruhr University Bochum, succeeding Axel Schölmerich, where he also holds a chair in Experimental Medicine.

His governance and advisory roles include President of the German Society of Experimental and Clinical Pharmacology and Toxicology (2006–2007), Chairman of the European Council for Cardiovascular Research (2006–2008), Chairman of the Worldwide Universities Network, membership of the Netherlands Academy of Technology and Innovation (since 2012), and membership of the expert committee of the German Excellence Strategy (since 2016). He is Chairman of the Ruhr University Bochum Foundation by virtue of his rectorship.
