Background
Mary Meeker is one of the most influential figures in technology investing, widely nicknamed the "Queen of the Internet." She earned a B.A. in psychology from DePauw University (1981) and an MBA in finance from Cornell University (1986), and received an honorary Doctor of Letters from DePauw in 2000. After early stints as a stockbroker at Merrill Lynch and an analyst at Salomon Brothers and the Cowen Group, she joined Morgan Stanley in 1991, where she rose to managing director and head of global technology research.
At Morgan Stanley (1991–2010) she became the defining Wall Street analyst of the internet era. She led the analyst team on Netscape's landmark 1995 IPO, co-authored the influential 1996 "The Internet Report" (dubbed "the bible" for dot-com investors), and worked on Google's 2004 IPO. She championed early winners including Dell, Microsoft, Intuit, Netscape, AOL, Amazon, Yahoo!, eBay, and Google. From 1995 through 2019 she published the annual "Internet Trends" report, one of the most anticipated documents in tech.
In December 2010 Meeker moved to venture capital as a partner at Kleiner Perkins (KPCB), where she participated in more than 20 deals and held board seats at DocuSign, Square, and LendingClub. In September 2018 she spun out of Kleiner Perkins to found BOND, a San Francisco–based growth-equity firm. BOND raised a $1.25 billion debut fund in 2019, followed by a $2 billion second fund (2021) and a roughly $2.5 billion third fund (2022).
Meeker remains a prominent thought leader: she has ranked on the Forbes Midas List (#21 in 2021), topped lists of female investors, and appeared on the Forbes World's 100 Most Powerful Women. In 2025 she ended a six-year report hiatus by publishing a ~340-page "Trends – Artificial Intelligence" report.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests primarily at growth/late stages (Series B–D) in companies already showing strong product-market fit and scaling metrics — not a seed-stage angel investor.
- Check sizes roughly $100K to $25M, deployed from multi-billion-dollar funds.
- Backs category-defining internet and software businesses: SaaS, fintech, AI, consumer, and enterprise.
- Thesis is famously data-driven — BOND describes Meeker as "a longtime technology data storyteller" who synthesizes data to inform investment theses in category-defining internet and software companies; her "Internet Trends" / "Trends – AI" research effectively maps where she sees durable secular growth.
- Looks for businesses riding large secular shifts (most recently the AI buildout, which she frames as "rebuilding at machine speed").
