Background
Matt Halverson is a Principal at Excellere Partners, a Denver-based private equity firm with roughly $2.3 billion of committed capital across four funds. He joined the firm in early 2014 as an Associate and is responsible for sourcing, evaluating, and executing new investments, arranging debt financing, and supporting management teams on value-creation initiatives. He was promoted to Vice President in February 2019 and to Principal in July 2022.
Before Excellere, Halverson built roughly fifteen years of experience in private equity and M&A. He was an Associate at Pfingsten Partners, an operationally focused private equity firm investing in manufacturing, distribution, and business-services companies, and earlier an Analyst at Lincoln International, a middle-market investment bank, where he advised clients on sell-side mergers and acquisitions.
He currently serves on the Board of Directors of AIS Healthcare and SCA Pharma, and previously was a key deal-team member on SePRO Corporation (exited 2024) and Mentis Neuro Health (sold prior to Excellere's later activity). Halverson holds a Bachelor of Business Administration, with high honors, from the University of Iowa. He is based near Loveland, Colorado, and is a University of Iowa Hawkeyes fan.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests through Excellere's core strategy: partnering with entrepreneurs and management teams via recapitalizations and management buyouts of established lower-middle-market companies — this is control/growth private equity, not angel or seed investing.
- Targeted sectors: healthcare, industrial growth, and business services.
- Excellere positions itself around a proprietary "Partnering for Growth®" value-creation approach — building platforms and pursuing add-on acquisitions, professionalizing operations, and driving organic growth alongside founders who often roll equity and stay on.
- His personal remit spans the full deal lifecycle: sourcing and evaluating new investments, arranging debt financing, supporting portfolio value creation, and pursuing liquidity through dividend recapitalizations and exits.
