Matt Pitzer

Matt Pitzer is an investment professional who has spent his post-finance career at Shelter Insurance Companies, a mutual insurance group headquartered in Columbia, Missouri. He joined the firm in 2010 and rose through Portfolio Manager and Senior Portfolio Manager roles to become Director of Investments, where he leads the development of investment strategy and conducts due diligence on private equity, real estate, and private credit opportunities for the insurer's balance sheet.

Pitzer's path to finance was unusual. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in English from Davidson College (1996), then built a roughly nine-year career in sports media — working as a writer and editor for The Sporting News and as a fantasy football analyst for USA Today / Gannett, a role that grew out of a weekly side project. He transitioned into finance after completing an MBA in Finance from the University of Missouri's Trulaske College of Business (2010) and earning the CFA charter.

Beyond his day job, Pitzer is well known in Columbia for public service. He served as the Fifth Ward representative on the Columbia City Council from April 2017 to April 2023 (two terms), where he emphasized analytical rigor, budget transparency, and improved financial reporting, and helped secure more than $15 million for Fifth Ward infrastructure (including the Nifong Boulevard expansion and Sinclair Road upgrades). He chose not to seek a third term in 2022. He also serves as Board Treasurer for Heart of Missouri CASA, a child-advocacy nonprofit.

Pitzer lives in Columbia with his wife, Kate, and their two sons, Jimmy and Evan.
