Background

Matteo Nichil is an Italian private equity investor with more than 15 years of M&A and investing experience. He began his career in the mergers & acquisitions team at Bank of America Merrill Lynch, where he worked as an associate on consumer and TMT transactions before moving into principal investing.

In November 2013, Stirling Square Capital Partners — a pan-European mid-market private equity firm — announced his appointment as an Executive on its investment team. Over roughly a decade at Stirling Square he rose to Principal, originating and executing transactions in Italy and across Europe, sitting on the boards of several portfolio companies, and supporting management teams through transformation and growth. His portfolio involvement included Itelyum (an Italian environmental/chemical-recycling group), Tapì Group (closures and packaging), and Sustainable Agro Solutions (SAS Agri, crop-input specialty).

In 2025 Nichil joined Nextalia Investment Management — a Milan-based alternative asset manager active across private equity, credit and ventures — as a Partner. Nextalia focuses primarily on Italian mid-cap opportunities, aligning with the geography and deal type Nichil has worked on throughout his career.

He holds a BSc in Economics and Finance from Università Bocconi in Milan and an MSc (Mathematical Trading and Finance) from Cass Business School, City University of London. He is fluent in English and Italian and is based in London.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Invests as an institutional private equity professional — majority/control positions in established mid-cap companies, not early-stage seed or angel checks.
  • Sector orientation built around consumer, TMT, and specialty industrials/environmental services, reflecting his BofA Merrill Lynch and Stirling Square deal history.
  • Strong Italian mid-market angle, both at Stirling Square (cross-border European deals with Italian assets like Itelyum) and now at Nextalia, which targets Italian mid-cap companies.
  • Value-creation approach: takes board seats and works hands-on with management on transformation and growth, rather than passive minority stakes.

Notable Investments

  • Itelyum — Italian industrial/environmental services and chemical-recycling group; backed by Stirling Square (with Deutsche Beteiligungs AG / DBAG co-investing, ~2021). Nichil was involved with the company during his Stirling Square tenure.
  • Tapì Group — Italian maker of premium closures/packaging for spirits, wine and specialty products; a Stirling Square portfolio holding Nichil was associated with.
  • Sustainable Agro Solutions (SAS Agri) — Spanish specialty crop-inputs / agri-solutions business within the Stirling Square portfolio.
