Background
Matthew Beach is a Partner at M.H. Carnegie & Co., an Australian alternative asset manager managing more than A$900 million across eight platforms. The firm invests across venture capital, private equity, real estate and debt, and describes its approach as “partnering with industry leaders to build platforms for success.”
Beach has more than 20 years of experience acquiring, building and selling businesses across industries including aviation, property, advertising and marketing. His current M.H. Carnegie role includes responsibility for the firm’s real assets and private credit platforms, and he serves on portfolio-company boards across HR services, property development, car rental and healthcare real estate.
Before M.H. Carnegie, Beach was founding CEO of Global Aviation Asset Management, an international aircraft-leasing business. He grew GAAM from a start-up into a fleet of 53 commercial aircraft valued at A$2 billion, with offices in Sydney, London and Dublin, and sold the aircraft portfolio to NYSE-listed FLY Leasing Limited in October 2011. He was also Executive Director at the Liberman family’s LJCB Investment Group.
Beach has a Chartered Accountant background and holds a Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting and Finance from the University of New South Wales. Outside M.H. Carnegie, he has been a director of the Parramatta Eels since February 2023 and Club Chairman since February 2025.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- M.H. Carnegie’s stated approach is to build “platform businesses with leaders in their industries,” combining industry operators’ sector knowledge and networks with the firm’s financial expertise.
- Beach is most clearly tied to real assets and private credit, so founder fit is strongest where capital structure, asset backing, operations and governance matter.
- The firm looks for business owners seeking “transformational capital” to accelerate a company vision, especially in opportunistic situations, market dislocations or misunderstood businesses.
- In service businesses, M.H. Carnegie targets companies with intellectual capital and specialist expertise that support corporate or government enterprises.
- In FMCG, the firm seeks Australian/New Zealand brands that can benefit from operational partners, supermarket-channel relationships and growth expertise.
- In medical devices, M.H. Carnegie focuses on Australian innovation and opportunities created by the U.S. medical-device funding environment.
- In private credit, the firm structures bespoke corporate and development-finance transactions, including real-estate loans secured by first or second mortgages.
