Background

Matthew Douglass is a serial software entrepreneur best known as a co-founder of Practice Fusion, the San Francisco–based cloud electronic health record (EHR) company. Founded in the mid-2000s (2005–2007) alongside Ryan Howard, Jonathan Malek, and Alan Wong, Practice Fusion grew under Douglass's engineering and product leadership into the most widely used web-based EHR in the United States, ultimately serving more than 32,000 medical practices across all 50 states. Over roughly a decade with the company he held a series of senior roles spanning the technical and customer organizations, including VP of Engineering, VP of EHR Experience, and Senior Vice President of Customer Experience. Practice Fusion was later acquired by Allscripts (now Veradigm).

Douglass earned a B.S. in Mathematical and Computer Sciences from the Colorado School of Mines (approximately 1998–2001). His background blends deep engineering work with civic and political technology: he has volunteered on numerous political campaigns across the U.S. and served as an engineer in the 2012 Obama campaign's San Francisco technology field office, described at the time as the first of its kind in American political history.

In 2021 he co-founded Beepboop, a remote, gamified language-learning platform that emerged during the COVID-19 pandemic, where he serves as Co-Founder and CTO leading the technology team. Beepboop uses an audio-first model and interactive "Drills" to maximize student speaking time, and reported a ~40% increase in speaking opportunities after moving from standard video conferencing to its custom platform. Douglass is also affiliated with Business for America, a nonpartisan business coalition focused on strengthening democracy and effective government.

Alongside operating roles, Douglass invests his own capital as an angel, concentrating on early-stage software companies — frequently in healthcare and mission-driven categories that echo his operating experience at Practice Fusion.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Invests as an individual angel at the seed / early stage, writing personal checks for equity.
  • Gravitates toward digital health and healthcare practice management software — the domain he helped pioneer at Practice Fusion.
  • Also backs business/productivity software and consumer (B2C) information services, per aggregator-tracked deal history.
  • Tends to co-invest alongside notable healthcare and tech investors (e.g., his Breakthrough Behavioral round included Keith Rabois, Kapor Capital, and Morado Ventures).
  • His career signals a preference for mission-driven founders building tools that broaden access (healthcare for under-served patients, language learning, civic/government tech).

Notable Investments

  • Breakthrough Behavioral (now Acorn Health) — pediatric behavioral / ABA therapy provider; Douglass participated as an angel alongside Keith Rabois, Kapor Capital, and Morado Ventures (company later raised a $5M Series A).
  • coUrbanize — community-engagement platform connecting real-estate developers with local residents.
  • Labdoor — independent supplement and product testing/ratings company (broader cap table led by Rock Health, Mark Cuban, Y Combinator, and Floodgate).
  • Beepboop — language-learning startup he co-founded and helps lead as CTO (operating role / founder stake).
