Matthew Eyton Jones

Matthew Eyton-Jones is a British institutional investor turned angel investor and board director with roughly 25 years of experience across pension funds, investment banking and investment management. He began his career in 1997 as a trainee on the underwriting floor of Royal & Sun Alliance in Liverpool, and went on to hold roles connected to Mercer Consulting, Bank of America, Goldman Sachs and the John Lewis Partnership. He is a graduate of the Advanced Leadership and General Management Programmes at the University of Cambridge's Judge Business School and the Investment Management Programme at London Business School, and is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute for Securities & Investment (Chartered FCSI).

From 2015 to 2021 he served as CEO of the CERN Pension Fund in Geneva — only the third chief executive since the fund's founding in 1955. There he oversaw roughly CHF 4.3–4.5 billion of assets on behalf of 7,500+ members across 48 countries, spanning public and private equity, venture capital, fixed income, real estate, hedge funds, timber and farmland. Under his leadership the fund won several industry awards (including CFI.co's Best Pension Fund Governance in Europe, 2019), strengthened its ESG and governance frameworks, and posted positive annual returns through his tenure. In 2017 he was ranked sixth in the Sovereign Wealth Fund Institute's Public Investor 100. He was invited to serve a third term but declined, announcing in October 2020 that he would step down in July 2021 to relocate from Switzerland to the UK for personal reasons.

Since leaving CERN he has built a portfolio of investing and governance roles. He established and leads Eyton Capital (also referenced as Eyton Consulting), a London-based advisory and investment vehicle. In 2024 he was appointed a Non-Executive Director of the newly formed Senwan Family Office and a member of the board of Saudi investment company SEDCO Holding (announced June 2024), where he also sits on the Audit and Risk Committee. Alongside this he is active as an angel investor and entrepreneur across public equity, private equity, venture capital and angel investing.

He maintains a wide network of professional affiliations: member of the World Economic Forum's Expert Network, Life Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, a Chatham House member, and a former Royal Navy Reserve officer. He has also served on the Cambridge Judge Alumni Council and the board of the Villiers Park Educational Trust, and championed gender balance at the CERN fund (a majority-female staff and senior leadership team).
