Background
Matthew Killebrew is the Chief Financial Officer and Chief Compliance Officer of Congruent Investment Partners, a Dallas-based private investment firm co-founded in early 2009 to invest in lower middle market companies. In his role he oversees the development and management of the firm's middle- and back-office operations — including treasury, valuation, accounting, and reporting — and administers the firm's compliance program and related regulatory reporting. He also occasionally participates in accounting due diligence for prospective investment opportunities.
Before joining Congruent, Killebrew worked at Highland Capital Management, the Dallas-based alternative asset manager, where he rose to Co-Head of Hedge Fund Accounting. There he was responsible for accounting, operations, valuation, and reporting for the firm's multi-billion-dollar hedge fund platform, and he also contributed to the firm's business development and investor relations group. Earlier in his career he was an associate at PricewaterhouseCoopers, providing assurance services to private investment advisers and private investment funds.
Killebrew earned a BBA in Accounting and Finance from Baylor University and holds both the CPA (Certified Public Accountant) and CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) designations. At Congruent he works alongside co-founders and principals Travis Baldwin (CFA) and Preston Massey, and vice president Bryan King.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Congruent invests in lower middle market companies, providing flexible capital structures that combine equity and mezzanine (subordinated debt) financing to fund acquisitions, growth capital, recapitalizations, management/partner buyouts, and ownership succession.
- The firm acquires majority control for recapitalizations and buyouts, and also makes non-control investments through minority equity and mezzanine structures.
- Focus industries include industrial services, niche manufacturing, distribution, aerospace, and business services, with a broader opportunistic range spanning food/agriculture, healthcare, energy, transportation, and real estate.
- Capital is managed through long-term private funds, partnerships, and SPVs, backed by foundations, endowments, pension funds, insurance companies, and high-net-worth individuals.
- Killebrew's own remit is finance, compliance, and operations rather than deal origination — deal sourcing and underwriting are led by principals Travis Baldwin and Preston Massey.
