Background

Matthew Mallett is a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) and a Dallas-based finance and product executive who spent roughly a decade as a Managing Director at Elm Park Capital Management, a Dallas private debt firm founded in 2010. He earned a Bachelor of Business Administration in Finance from the University of Texas at Austin's McCombs School of Business (2003–2007). His early career combined equity research and credit: he worked as a research analyst at Bares Capital Management, in middle-market credit at ORIX USA Corporation, and in investment banking at Bank of America Merrill Lynch before joining Elm Park around 2011.

At Elm Park Capital, Mallett focused on debt and structured equity financing for software and technology-enabled service companies within the firm's lower middle market strategy. Elm Park was founded by Charles Winograd (former CEO of RBC Capital Markets) and Mark Schachter (former head of private credit investing at HBK Capital Management); by early 2019 the firm had closed its third fund at a $300 million hard cap, bringing cumulative capital raised to roughly $890 million across ~30 lower middle market private debt investments. In June 2022, Atalaya Capital Management hired Elm Park's credit investment team and took on its loan portfolio.

After Elm Park, Mallett pivoted from investing into fintech and software operating roles. He joined Dallas-based fintech CollateralEdge as Senior Vice President, Product beginning in mid-2021, then became President & Head of Product at Datum Source, a procurement-automation SaaS platform for advanced manufacturing and hardware companies (founded 2021 by former SpaceX supply-chain leaders). Datum Source was acquired by advanced-manufacturing startup Hadrian in a deal that closed in July 2024.

The stub email domain (elmparkcap.com) and Dallas 972 phone area code are consistent with his tenure at Elm Park Capital, though his current, active role as of 2024–2026 is in software product leadership rather than credit investing.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Invests through private debt and structured equity — not venture equity — targeting established lower middle market companies with real cash flow, not early-stage startups.
  • Elm Park's stated deal size is roughly $5–$25 million per transaction, financing acquisitions, growth capital, refinancings, recapitalizations, and special situations.
  • Sector emphasis on software, technology-enabled business services, healthcare, and financial services.
  • Frequently partners with private equity sponsors needing a flexible debt or junior-capital partner.
  • Mallett's personal specialty within the firm was debt and structured equity financing for software and tech-enabled service companies, reflecting his blended credit + equity-research background.

Notable Investments

  • Elm Park Capital Fund III — closed at its $300M hard cap (announced January 2019); part of ~$890M raised across ~30 lower middle market private debt deals since 2010 (firm-level; specific deals Mallett led are not individually disclosed publicly).
  • CollateralEdge — Dallas fintech (bank lending-capacity platform) that raised an oversubscribed ~$3.5M seed round in September 2021 from Perot Jain, Capital Factory's Josh Baer, and Kneeland Youngblood; Mallett joined as an operator (SVP, Product), not as an outside angel.
  • Datum Source — procurement-automation SaaS for advanced manufacturing; Mallett served as President & Head of Product until its acquisition by Hadrian (closed July 2024).
