Background
Matt Nichols is a General Partner at Commerce Ventures, a sector-focused venture fund (most recently ~$150M–$165M in assets) that invests across retail technology, commerce infrastructure, and fintech. He leads the firm's commerce-infrastructure/retail-technology investing team and sits on its management committee. He has been an investor in and operator of early-stage technology companies for more than 20 years.
Before joining Commerce Ventures, Nichols was CEO of Gemvara, a custom-jewelry e-commerce business that was ultimately sold to a Berkshire Hathaway subsidiary — giving him direct operating experience running a consumer commerce company. Earlier in his career he was a venture capitalist at Highland Capital Partners and Morgan Stanley Venture Partners, where his investments included Bullhorn (acquired by Vista Equity Partners), Pixable (acquired by SingTel), Avamar (acquired by EMC), Tarari (acquired by LSI), and Perceptive Software (acquired by Lexmark).
Nichols began on Morgan Stanley's Technology Corporate Finance team, where he was part of the Google IPO team, and he later spent time in Google's corporate development group. He holds a B.A. in Economics from Pomona College and an MBA with high distinction from the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests almost exclusively in commerce infrastructure, retail technology, and adjacent fintech — the "picks-and-shovels" enabling modern commerce rather than consumer brands themselves.
- Stage: primarily seed and early-stage (through Series B/C on record), often leading rounds.
- Check size: roughly $1M–$5M, typically around $3M, and takes board seats (currently on the boards of Pensa and Instock).
- Brings an operator's lens (former e-commerce CEO) plus deep venture experience, favoring founders solving concrete infrastructure problems in retail and payments.
- In 2025–2026 he has focused heavily on agentic commerce and AI-driven checkout — SKU mapping, API-first/agentic checkout, enriched product feeds, wallet competition, and how AI shopping agents reshape product discovery and retailer traffic. He advises brands to get "AI magic on your own site" as a foundation before broader agentic-commerce plays.
