Background

Dr. Matthias Ruhl is a large-scale systems, algorithms, and data-mining expert turned startup co-founder and angel investor. He earned an M.S. in Computer Science and Mathematics from the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg in Germany (1993–1998, graduating with highest honors) and a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from MIT (1998–2003), where he worked in the Theory of Computation group on network design, scheduling algorithms, complexity theory, and cryptography. Following his doctorate, he held the Josef Raviv Memorial Postdoctoral Fellowship at IBM Almaden Research Center (2003–2004). He was the 1995 World Champion of the ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC) and has continued to serve as a contest judge.

Ruhl spent roughly nine years at Google as a Senior Staff/Research Scientist (2004–2013). There he built the backend query engine, customer database, and logs-processing systems that scaled Google Analytics to millions of accounts handling over 900,000 requests per second. His Google work also included designing anomaly-detection algorithms that scale to billions of time series per day, re-implementing the core of Google Translate for a roughly 10x throughput improvement, and building ratings-and-reviews collection for Google Checkout.

In 2013 he co-founded Accompany with CEO Amy Chang and Ryan McDonough, serving as Chief Technology Officer. Accompany was a relationship-intelligence platform that used AI and machine learning to give professionals comprehensive data on people and companies. The company raised a $15M Series B in 2014 from ICONIQ Capital, Charles River Ventures, and Cowboy Ventures, and was acquired by Cisco in May 2018 (reported at roughly $270M). After the acquisition Ruhl served as a Distinguished Engineer at Cisco (2018–2021).

Alongside his operating career, Ruhl invests as an angel, typically at the seed stage. Public investor databases (PitchBook, Foundersuite, InvestorHunt, VentureBANC) list him as an angel investor based in Los Altos.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Invests as an individual angel, primarily at the seed stage.
  • Brings deep operator credibility in data infrastructure, AI/ML, algorithms, search/analytics, and large-scale distributed systems — the domains where he built and scaled products at Google and Accompany.
  • Documented investment outside his core technical domain in publishing (Plympton), suggesting openness to founder-driven, thesis-fit opportunities beyond pure infrastructure.
  • As a technical founder who scaled a company to a $270M exit, he is positioned to add value on engineering architecture, ML/data problems, and scaling challenges rather than purely financial support.

Notable Investments

  • Plympton — Digital publishing / serialized-fiction startup; listed as an angel investment (publishing sector).
