Background
Maurizio Liverani is a serial technology entrepreneur turned angel investor and venture partner. He is a Venture Partner at Network Society Ventures (netsoc.vc), the venture firm associated with futurist and entrepreneur David Orban, and he serves as an advisor/mentor to Berkeley SkyDeck and Berkeley SkyDeck Europe. He also holds an advisory position with La Gemma Venture, an Italian early-stage investment vehicle.
His operating career spans more than three decades of founding and running technology companies. In 1988 he founded Alcom Corp., a California-based manufacturer of document communications servers, which he led as CEO until 1991. He founded and led Algotek Inc., a maker of infant auditory brainstem-response hearing screeners, which later became part of Natus Medical Inc. (Natus was acquired in 2022 in a deal valued at roughly $1.1 billion). From 1991 to 2005 he built the Algol Group, a distributor of network computing products and internet infrastructure solutions, serving as CEO of Algol France and Chairman & CEO of Algol Group in Milan.
More recently, Liverani has been Chairman/President of 30SecondsToFly Inc., an AI-based corporate travel-agency startup, and President of Instants AI Pte. Ltd. He has also served as Chairman and Partner of Baryon Capital Corporation, an advisory and angel-investing firm focused primarily on the biotech and infotech sectors, and has held directorships at companies including WorldOnline, LookNBuy, and Party America.
He holds a Ph.D. and an M.S. in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University and a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Surrey (England). He is an alumnus of Harvard Business School and a member of the YPO Gold organization.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests primarily at the seed / early stage as an angel and venture partner, backing founders in deep-tech and frontier-technology areas.
- Sector interests reflect his operating background: AI, biotech/medtech, logistics, commercial distribution, and network/computing infrastructure.
- Brings hands-on operator value beyond capital — areas he explicitly advises on include go-to-market strategy, fundraising, business strategy, and startup mentoring (per his SkyDeck and La Gemma Venture advisor profiles).
- As a Stanford-trained engineer and multi-exit founder, he is drawn to technically credible teams building companies with a clear path to scale — the same profile as his own ventures (Algotek/Natus, Algol Group).
Notable Investments
- Arkimedia — Seed-round investment (2012); listed as his primary tracked angel deal on Crunchbase.
- 30SecondsToFly Inc. — AI-driven corporate travel-assistant startup where he serves as Chairman/President (founder-operator involvement).
- Instants AI Pte. Ltd. — AI venture where he serves as President.
- Algotek Inc. → Natus Medical Inc. — company he founded that became part of Natus Medical (acquired ~$1.1B, 2022) — an operating exit rather than a passive investment, but central to his track record.
