Background

Marc McCabe is an Irish operator-turned-investor who spent the core of his operating career at Airbnb, which he joined as an early employee. At Airbnb he built and scaled teams across Business Development, "Airbnb for Business/Work," and Samara — Airbnb's R&D/design-innovation arm — before departing the company in 2018. Prior to Airbnb, he worked at Google and at the seed firm SV Angel, giving him a mix of big-tech operating experience and early-stage investing exposure.

Since leaving Airbnb, McCabe has focused full-time on angel investing and advising founders on fundraising, business strategy, hiring, and organizational design. He has invested as a partner at SV Angel and as a scout for Sequoia Capital, a role through which he has backed a large number of now-prominent startups at the seed stage. Across these vehicles he has been a seed investor in well over 100 companies.

Today McCabe runs Nomad Capital, his own seed-stage fund based in Dublin, Ireland, where he serves as Founder and General Partner. Nomad concentrates on software powering high-growth companies and high-growth verticals, with a predominantly B2B orientation. He is also a frequent commentator on early-stage fundraising, having published a widely shared fundraising playbook and appeared on investing podcasts such as Harry Stebbings' "20Angel" and EUVC.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Invests primarily at pre-seed and seed, writing checks of roughly $50K–$300K, occasionally into Series A.
  • "Nomad invests in software powering high growth companies and high growth verticals. Nomad focuses predominantly on B2B investments."
  • Core themes: B2B software/SaaS, marketplaces, fintech, developer tools, and enterprise, with selective consumer and AI/ML bets.
  • Emphasizes operator experience as essential to being a good angel — his own scaling of teams at Airbnb informs how he evaluates founders' ability to build and hire.
  • Backs strong teams with early traction; prefers warm introductions but is open to (less-preferred) cold outreach.
  • Known for high-conviction, high-hit-rate seed picks (Intercom, Deel, Linear, OpenSea) — and candid about misses, e.g. passing on Coinbase at seed.

Notable Investments

  • Deel — global payroll/HR platform; seed investor, now a multi-billion-dollar company.
  • Intercom — customer messaging/support software; early backer.
  • Linear — issue-tracking and product-management software for engineering teams; seed.
