Background

Merete Lundbye Møller is a Danish lawyer and the Venture Partner & General Counsel of Sunstone Life Science Ventures, an independent European venture capital firm founded in 2007 and headquartered in Copenhagen. As the firm's in-house counsel, she focuses on legal affairs and corporate governance and, drawing on more than 25 years of experience, is typically engaged across the full investment lifecycle — from the initial investment through to final exit negotiations.

Before joining Sunstone, Merete practiced law for nine years at Gorrissen Federspiel, one of Denmark's leading law firms, where she specialised in mergers and acquisitions as well as corporate and general contract law. She is admitted to both the New York Bar and the Danish Bar, and holds LL.M. degrees from New York University School of Law and from Aarhus University, Denmark.

Beyond Sunstone, Merete is active as a board director across business, public-interest and cultural organisations. Her reported directorships have included deputy chair of TV 2 Danmark, chair of Bullitt Film ApS, and board memberships at Greenland Holding A/S, the Danish Green Investment Fund (Danmarks Grønne Investeringsfond), Curo Capital Fondsmæglerselskab A/S, the performance-theatre company Hotel Pro Forma, and the art space Warehouse9. This mix reflects a career that pairs deep transactional/legal expertise with governance work across both commercial and cultural institutions.

Note: Merete's role is that of a legal and governance partner within an institutional life-science VC rather than an independent angel investor — the "Angel Investors / Seed Round" designation in the original stub does not match her actual position at Sunstone.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Invests through Sunstone Life Science Ventures, an early-stage European life-science VC with roughly €500M under management focused on transforming scientific discovery into therapeutics that improve patient outcomes.
  • Concentrates on early-stage drug development — companies at the pre-clinical or Phase I stage, generally via Series A/B rounds.
  • Prioritises therapeutics with solid in-vivo preclinical data and a well-understood mechanism of action, often in niche/specialty pharma and orphan-drug indications.
  • Core therapeutic areas: oncology, rare diseases, neurology and immunology.
  • As General Counsel/Venture Partner, her value-add centers on legal structuring, corporate governance, M&A and exit/IPO negotiations rather than sourcing deals as a lead investor — she is engaged "in all stages of the investment process, from the initial investment to the final exit negotiations."

Notable Investments

  • Galecto Biotech — fibrosis/cancer biotech; Sunstone participated through its Nasdaq IPO (2020), an event Merete publicly highlighted.
  • IO Biotech — immuno-oncology company (Copenhagen); later Nasdaq-listed.
  • Zealand Pharma — Danish peptide-therapeutics company; a long-standing Sunstone success story.
  • MinerVax — vaccine developer (Group B Streptococcus vaccine).
  • Alligator Bioscience — Swedish immuno-oncology company.
  • Orphazyme — rare-disease therapeutics company.
  • Nuevolution — DNA-encoded library drug-discovery company (acquired by Amgen).
  • Symphogen — antibody therapeutics company (acquired by Servier).
  • JenaValve Technology — structural-heart / transcatheter valve company; reported as Sunstone's most recent exit (July 2024).
