Background
Mike Abbott is a veteran engineering leader turned investor whose career spans some of the most demanding software organizations in the industry. He earned a BS in biochemistry from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo in 1994 and pursued PhD coursework in molecular biology/pharmacology at the University of Washington before moving into technology. His early roles included research positions at SRI International and GeneTrace Systems, followed by engineering leadership at USWeb and Electron Economy. In 2001 he founded Composite Software, a data-virtualization company later acquired by Cisco, and he co-founded the social platform Passenger.
Abbott went on to serve as general manager of Microsoft's .NET online services (the effort that evolved into Azure), then led software development of HP/Palm's next-generation webOS platform. In May 2010 he joined Twitter as VP of Engineering, where he rebuilt the company's infrastructure and grew the engineering team from roughly 80 to more than 350 engineers in under 18 months. After a brief stint as an EIR at Benchmark, he joined Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers as a partner in December 2011, focusing on the firm's digital/enterprise practice — social, mobile, and cloud-computing startups — until departing in 2017 to return to building.
From February 2018 to early 2023 he was VP of Engineering for Apple Cloud Services, overseeing core infrastructure and products including iCloud, account security, iMessage, iCloud Private Relay, and Mail. In May 2023 he became Executive Vice President of Software & Services at General Motors, running a global organization of nearly 20,000 engineers, before resigning in March 2024, reportedly for health reasons.
Today Abbott is active as an angel investor and is a co-founder and board member of Open Athena, a nonprofit AI foundation launched in 2024 alongside Cloudera co-founder Jeff Hammerbacher and Two Sigma co-founder David Siegel. Open Athena partners with academic labs building large AI/foundation models — supplying senior engineering talent and GPU-cloud partnerships so scientists aren't resource-constrained. This mission mirrors Abbott's own thesis: back deeply technical people solving hard infrastructure problems.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests across pre-seed, seed, and Series A, with sector emphasis on cloud/enterprise infrastructure, AI/foundation models, and social networks.
- Prioritizes founder quality over metrics: beyond intelligence and ambition, he looks for high curiosity ("essential for testing assumptions and iterating") and deep internal drive — "a chip on their shoulder, something to prove at a deep individual level."
- Believes the balance of power has shifted to founders, so investors must win deals by adding real value, not just capital: "It's not just about seeing the right companies and making the right decisions — now you have to be able to *win*."
- Frames his own motivation around mentorship and operator empathy: "Success means the opportunities to mentor and coach others" — and cites frustration with "bad behavior…from board members" as a reason he moved into venture.
- Brings unusually deep hands-on engineering credibility (Twitter infra, Apple iCloud, Microsoft/Azure), making him a natural fit for infrastructure- and platform-heavy technical teams.
