Background
Michael Brom is a co-founder and Managing Partner of Concurrence Holdings, a West Michigan–focused investment and management firm he launched in 2017 alongside Jason Byrd. He brings more than 30 years of transaction, financial-management, and operations experience, and has been directly involved in private investments since 1995, when he joined the Huizenga Group — a Grand Rapids family investment office. Over his career he has served as Chief Financial Officer and as an operating partner, treasurer, or president for numerous companies across diverse industries, with revenues ranging from $5 million to over $200 million.
Before his family-office and private-investment work, Brom spent nearly 10 years at Deloitte, serving Midwest-based middle-market clients on audit and related attest engagements. His hands-on transaction experience spans deal sourcing, evaluation, structuring, and negotiation of final terms for both platform and add-on investments, and he has negotiated transactions and supporting agreements across North America, Europe, and Asia.
Brom earned his Bachelor's degree in Accounting from Aquinas College in 1985 and obtained his CPA certification in 1987. He has been active in the West Michigan community, having served in board capacities for National Heritage Academies, the Grand Rapids Civic Theatre, and the Michigan Chamber of Commerce. Concurrence was formed when Brom and Byrd — former colleagues at a family investment office — split off to build their own lower-middle-market investment firm, a launch covered by MiBiz, the Grand Rapids Business Journal, and Family Capital in 2017.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- "Transitional capital" for the lower middle market: Concurrence provides capital and management support for ownership transitions, management buyouts, corporate carve-outs, and growth capital in established operating businesses.
- Disciplined financial screen: Targets companies with revenue above ~$10M and normalized EBITDA of $1–8M that have identifiable growth opportunities.
- Tightly local: Prefers platform investments located within roughly 90 minutes of Grand Rapids, reflecting a hands-on, operationally-involved West Michigan strategy.
- Sector breadth within the industrial economy: Niche manufacturing, food & beverage, transportation, medical device, infrastructure, value-added distribution, and B2B services.
- Operator-led, long-hold posture: Brom and Byrd back existing management teams and typically keep incumbent leadership in place after a transaction (as at Utility Contracting), emphasizing partnership over control-and-replace.
- In his own words on what earns a "yes," Brom praised Mission Design & Automation for building "a stellar reputation as a company that people want to work with and for, and that is known for world-class design and automation capabilities and exceptional customer service."
Notable Investments
- Mission Design & Automation (Holland, MI) — Intelligent automation and machine-design integrator; Concurrence's first platform investment (announced October 2017). Named to Michigan's "50 Companies to Watch" following the acquisition; a new CEO was appointed in June 2020.
- Utility Contracting Co. (UCC) (Sparta, MI) — Telecommunications/utility construction firm acquired in August 2018; Concurrence raised $3.8M+ in equity from ~20 investors for the deal and retained the existing leadership team (Executive Director Andrew Ross, President Tim Rood, CFO Andy Edwards).
