Background

Michael C. “Mike” Gitlin is President and Chief Executive Officer of Capital Group and chair of the Capital Group Management Committee. Capital Group’s own profile says he has 32 years of investment-industry experience and has been with the firm for 11 years. Earlier at Capital Group, he was a partner at Capital Fixed Income Investors with primary responsibility for leading the fixed-income business.

Before joining Capital Group in 2015, Gitlin was head of fixed income at T. Rowe Price and, before that, global head of trading. His earlier roles included head of U.S. equity sales at Citigroup Global Markets, as well as head of Asia-Pacific sales trading, head of Asia-Pacific cash equities and head of international cash equities. He also served as head of Asia-Pacific trading for Credit Suisse Asset Management and traded Japanese equities and bonds for George Weiss and Associates.

Gitlin holds a bachelor’s degree from Colgate University. LinkedIn and Capital Group materials place him in Los Angeles; his LinkedIn profile also notes that he has lived and worked in London, Hong Kong, Singapore, Baltimore, Connecticut and New York.

He became Capital Group’s President and CEO in October 2023, succeeding Tim Armour as part of a planned leadership transition announced in 2023. Morningstar described him at the time as the executive who had helped turn around Capital Group’s fixed-income business, noting that Capital managed more than $450 billion in fixed-income assets as of December 2022.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Gitlin’s current role is executive leadership of Capital Group, not a publicly documented personal angel-investing role. I found no verifiable personal seed-stage portfolio or check-size data.
  • Capital Group’s stated investment approach, the Capital System, emphasizes collaborative research, diverse perspectives and long-term investing. The firm says portfolios are run by multiple managers who contribute independent, high-conviction ideas.
  • In fixed income, Capital Group emphasizes deep fundamental research, collaboration between portfolio managers and analysts, consistent risk-adjusted outcomes, analyst-managed money and multilayered risk management.
  • Capital Group’s fixed-income platform spans U.S. core/core-plus, mortgage, global, short-term, inflation-linked, emerging-markets debt, U.S. government, tax-exempt and credit mandates.
  • Gitlin’s recent public-private markets focus is through Capital Group’s partnership with KKR. On the April 2025 launch of public-private credit funds, he said the firms were combining public and private exposures to deliver “the best of both worlds.”
  • Gitlin has repeatedly framed Capital Group’s strategic direction around client outcomes rather than product pushing. In a LinkedIn post after client meetings in Asia, he wrote that clients want “solutions partners, not product pushers.”

Notable Investments

  • Capital Group KKR Core Plus+ — Public-private credit interval fund launched by Capital Group and KKR in April 2025; designed to blend public fixed income with private credit.
  • Capital Group KKR Multi-Sector+ — Public-private credit interval fund launched in April 2025 alongside Core Plus+; Capital Group and KKR said the funds would seek roughly 60% public fixed income and 40% private credit over time, subject to market conditions.
  • Capital Group KKR U.S. Equity+ — Proposed public-private equity interval fund filed in July 2025 and expected to launch in the U.S. in early 2026, pending regulatory approval.
  • Capital Group fixed-income platform — Gitlin previously led Capital Group’s fixed-income business; Capital Group reports $665 billion in fixed-income assets under management by Capital Fixed Income Investors as of March 31, 2026.
