Background

Michael "Mike" Goguen spent nearly two decades as a partner at Sequoia Capital, from 1996 to 2016. Over that period he sponsored and led 54 early- and growth-stage investments with a combined market value reported at over $67 billion, concentrated in networking, semiconductors, cybersecurity, bioinformatics, and biopharma. He served on the boards of companies including Infoblox, OpenDNS, Quantenna Communications, Versa Networks, and Viptela — several of which were ultimately acquired by acquirers such as Cisco. Before venture capital, he held engineering and technical leadership roles at companies including DEC, SynOptics, Centillion, and Bay Networks. He holds a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Cornell University and an M.S. in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University.

In 2019, Goguen founded Two Bear Capital, based in Whitefish, Montana. The firm manages more than $275 million across two funds (Fund I and a 2024-vintage Fund II) and invests in early-stage companies where technology and life sciences intersect — spanning neurodegenerative disease, precision oncology, advanced network architecture, data analytics, and cybersecurity. One of its earliest and most prominent deals was a $22 million Series A investment in Montana biotech Inimmune in July 2020, described at the time as the largest venture investment in the state's history.

Beyond investing, Goguen is a prominent Montana philanthropist and first responder. He founded and funds Two Bear Air, a nonprofit helicopter search-and-rescue operation based at Glacier Park International Airport that has flown more than 600 missions, and in 2017 established the Two Bear Therapeutic Riding Center, an equine-assisted program for people with special needs. He lives at a large estate overlooking Whitefish Lake.

Goguen's departure from Sequoia and subsequent years also drew significant public attention through litigation. In March 2016 his employment at Sequoia ended in connection with a lawsuit filed by a former associate, Amber Laurel Baptiste, alleging abuse and breach of contract; that case was dismissed in March 2019. In February 2021, four former employees filed a civil racketeering (RICO) suit against him; the case was dismissed with prejudice in May 2022 by U.S. District Judge Donald Molloy. The lead plaintiff in that matter, Matthew Marshall, was later convicted in federal court on charges including money laundering and defrauding Goguen. Founders researching him should be aware these matters are part of the public record.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Invests at the seed and Series A stages in early-stage companies, frequently leading rounds and taking board involvement.
  • Targets the convergence of advanced technology and life sciences — biotech, bioinformatics, immunotherapy, oncology and neurology on the life-science side; AI/ML, enterprise software, networking, and cybersecurity on the tech side.
  • The firm frames its mission as combining venture capital's ability to create "transformative platforms" with a commitment to making "lives better in an enduring way" — favoring companies tackling hard, fundamental scientific or infrastructure problems (e.g., "previously undruggable" targets, quantum-resistant encryption, zero-trust network security).
  • Draws on Goguen's deep networking/cybersecurity operating and investing background (Sequoia deals like Infoblox, OpenDNS, Versa, Viptela) — pattern-matching technical, infrastructure-heavy companies.
  • Has an explicit interest in seeding a technology and life-science ecosystem in Montana, while investing nationally.

Notable Investments
