Background
Michael Hoffort is a Saskatchewan agriculture and finance executive best known for his 34- to 35-year career at Farm Credit Canada. He joined FCC in 1988 after university and spent his first nine years as a relationship manager working directly with farm families. Over time, he moved through leadership roles including Vice-President, Partners and Channels; Vice-President, Prairie Operations; Senior Vice-President, Portfolio and Credit Risk; Executive Vice-President and Chief Risk Officer; and ultimately President and CEO.
Hoffort was appointed President and CEO of Farm Credit Canada in July 2014 and served until his retirement on June 30, 2022. During that period, FCC was Canada’s leading agricultural lender; government biographies cite a loan portfolio of more than $36 billion in 2019, while Hoffort told a House of Commons agriculture committee in 2018 that FCC had more than 100,000 customers and represented about 30% of Canadian agriculture lending.
His education is in agriculture and governance. Canada.ca states that he earned a Bachelor of Science in agriculture, specializing in agricultural economics, from the University of Saskatchewan, and that he is a Professional Agrologist. His LinkedIn profile lists ICD - Rotman School of Management education from 2014 to 2015, and SeedMaster describes him as holding the ICD.D designation from the Institute of Corporate Directors.
After leaving FCC, Hoffort continued in agriculture governance. In October 2024, SeedMaster announced that he had joined its board of directors. SeedMaster also lists him as a Global Transportation Hub board member and University of Regina Senate member representing the Saskatchewan Institute of Agrologists. His public board service has included STARS Air Ambulance and Special Olympics Saskatchewan.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- No public source verified Hoffort as a personal angel investor with a disclosed seed-stage portfolio or check size. The “Angel Investors / Seed Round” stub should therefore be treated as unverified.
- His publicly documented operating and governance focus is agriculture, food, lending, risk, and technology adoption. At FCC, he emphasized connecting “producers and agribusiness and agri-food operators” to industry opportunities.
- He appears most relevant to founders building for Canadian agriculture, especially products with clear farm-level ROI, risk reduction, or sustainability impact.
- Hoffort’s own SeedMaster quote frames his current sector interest: SeedMaster’s precision seeding technology contributes to “improved farm production, profitability and sustainability through enhanced soil health.”
- In 2012 parliamentary testimony, while still an FCC executive, Hoffort described FCC’s approach as understanding customer financial needs and business objectives, then tailoring a package to those needs. That points to a practical, finance-first lens rather than a pure technology-first lens.
- FCC Capital, launched after Hoffort’s CEO tenure, now makes direct equity investments in Canadian agriculture and food companies, with a stated minimum FCC Capital commitment of $5 million and a requirement for an experienced institutional or strategic lead investor. That is useful context for FCC, but it should not be attributed to Hoffort personally.
Notable Investments
- No verified public personal angel investments or seed-stage portfolio companies were found for Michael Hoffort.
- Farm Credit Canada / Avrio Ventures LP III: FCC was an incumbent limited partner in Avrio Ventures LP III, whose 2014 first close totaled $65 million with FCC and Export Development Canada commitments. This was an institutional FCC commitment in agri-food venture capital, not a verified personal investment by Hoffort.
- Farm Credit Canada / FCC Capital: FCC announced in May 2025 that FCC Capital would commit $2 billion by 2030 to agtech innovation, including direct investments, fund investments, and accelerator support from pre-seed to late-stage companies. This occurred after Hoffort’s 2022 retirement from FCC and should not be presented as his personal investing activity.
