Background

Michael J. Leffell spent the core of his career at Davidson Kempner Capital Management, the event-driven, multi-strategy hedge fund, where he served as Deputy Executive Managing Member and co-ran the firm's distressed-securities strategy for roughly two decades. By his account, the firm grew from about $20 million under management to a $12 billion firm during his tenure. He retired from Davidson Kempner at the end of 2009 / in 2010 after 21 years.

Before his investment career, Leffell trained as a lawyer. He earned a B.A. magna cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa, from Clark University (1981), where he won the H. Donaldson Jordan Prize in History, and a J.D. from Columbia Law School (1984), where he was a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar. He began as a litigation associate at the New York firm Kaye, Scholer, Fierman, Hays & Handler before moving into investing.

After retiring, Leffell built a sequence of investing ventures out of his family office. He founded Portage Partners (Portage Advisors LLC, 2010; Portage Partners LLC, 2022), which began as his single-family office and evolved into a non-discretionary investment platform serving a community of active and semi-retired investment professionals. Out of Portage he incubated Canoe Intelligence (started 2013, spun out 2017), a fintech company that automates document and data processing for alternative investments; Canoe later raised a $36M Series C led by Goldman Sachs Asset Management, and Leffell remains its Chairman.

In 2021 he founded 10 East, a membership-based investment firm that lets sophisticated investors co-invest alongside Leffell on a deal-by-deal basis across private markets. Beyond investing, Leffell is active philanthropically and institutionally: he founded the Lisa and Michael Leffell Foundation (1999), is a Trustee of JINSA, Chairman of Commentary Magazine, and President Emeritus of the Board of the Solomon Schechter School of Westchester. He previously served as a director of PG&E Corporation (through June 2020).

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Co-investment, not fund-of-funds: 10 East structures commitments through direct co-investments and single-deal SPVs / niche fund vehicles, allowing members to "invest alongside" Leffell rather than committing blind capital to a pooled fund.
  • Deal-by-deal, discretionary participation: A flexible, non-discretionary mandate — members choose which opportunities to back, without fixed fund commitments.
  • Breadth across private markets: Allocations span private equity, venture capital, private credit, and real estate, across buyout, growth, late-stage, and earlier venture rounds.
  • "Niche" private opportunities: The platform emphasizes hard-to-access, differentiated private deals — the focus of his Capital Allocators (Ted Seides) podcast appearance, "Opening Doors to Niche Private Opportunities at 10 East."
  • Operator/insider sourcing: Portage's stated principles are shared intellectual capital, aligned interests, and collectively sourced opportunities — sourcing through a network of seasoned investment professionals.

Notable Investments

  • Canoe Intelligence — fintech automating alternatives data/document processing; incubated within Portage (2013), spun out 2017, later raised a $36M Series C led by Goldman Sachs Asset Management. Leffell is Chairman.
  • Allure Security — cybersecurity / brand-protection company; Portage Partners participated in a ~$6.84M Seed round (Nov 17, 2021) alongside Glasswing Ventures, Gutbrain Ventures, Impellent Ventures, PBJ Capital, and Zetta Venture Partners.
  • Seeds — wealth/investment fintech; completed a $10M Series A round led by Portage.
  • (Per CB Insights, Portage also made earlier disclosed-only Series A (Jan 2020) and Seed (Aug 2017) investments whose company details are subscription-gated.)
