Background
Michael Kahan is the co-founder and a Managing Partner of North Peak Capital Management, LLC, a New York–based investment firm he runs alongside his brother, Jeremy Kahan. He originally founded North Peak's predecessor entity to pursue private-equity-style investments, then shifted his focus to public-equity investing, and in 2015 the brothers launched their long/short equity fund together.
Before North Peak, Kahan served as a Director at Onex Corporation, one of Canada's leading private equity firms, where he executed and managed private equity investments. Earlier in his career he worked as a management consultant at McKinsey & Company. This private-equity and consulting pedigree directly informs North Peak's stated approach of applying deep, private-equity-style diligence to public markets.
Kahan earned an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School and a B.A. in Economics, magna cum laude, from Harvard University. He currently sits on the Board of Directors of Extend Fertility, a fertility-services company — the one identifiable instance of him holding a governance role in a private company.
North Peak's investment team draws talent from top-tier firms including Citadel Global Equities, Bain Capital, Silver Lake Partners, and Steadfast, supporting a research-intensive, concentrated-portfolio process.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- "Private equity in public markets": North Peak conducts deep, private-equity-style fundamental research on a concentrated, long-biased public portfolio.
- Value-driven: The firm self-describes as value investors — "hyper-focused on value relative to price," waiting to deploy capital only when a business can be bought for less than fair value.
- Target returns / horizon: They look for "businesses where we can triple our capital in five years" (a ~3x-in-5-years hunt).
- Concentration: Typically ~10–12 long positions and ~3–5 shorts, running roughly 125% long / ~50% short exposure — mirroring the concentrated structure of a PE fund.
- Sector tilt: A stated love of the technology sector for its "cocktail of strong and sustainable top-line growth as well as operating leverage," though the fund invests as a generalist across public equities.
- Discipline: Emphasis on high alignment with investors, patient/selective capital deployment, and tax-efficient structuring.
