Background

Mike Krupka is the founder and founding managing director of Bain Capital Ventures, the venture-capital arm of Bain Capital. He joined Bain Capital in 1991, having previously worked as a consultant at Bain & Company. Before leading the firm's venture efforts, he was a Managing Director in Bain Capital's Private Equity Group, where he focused on technology and technology-driven companies. As of Bain Capital's current team listing, his role is described as Senior Advisor, Ventures, reflecting a transition from day-to-day managing-director duties while remaining active with the firm.

Over his career he has invested in numerous companies spanning the full life cycle, from early-stage startups through businesses generating more than $1 billion in revenue. His investment work centers on application software and SaaS across a wide range of verticals, including insurance, real estate, travel and entertainment, automotive, education, HR, and healthcare. He has also brought operating experience to his investing, having served as president of a roughly $110 million-revenue software company and CFO of a roughly $70 million-revenue services company.

Krupka earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry from Dartmouth College and an MBA from Harvard Business School. He has been recognized on the Forbes Midas List of top venture investors. Beyond his firm and portfolio work, he has been deeply involved in civic and philanthropic activity in the Boston area, notably serving on the board of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston for more than two decades, and he is affiliated with the leadership council of the Gloucester Marine Genomics Institute.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Invests primarily in application software and SaaS businesses, with strong preference for vertical-market software (insurance, real estate, auto, travel/entertainment, education, HR, healthcare/data services).
  • Backs companies across a broad maturity range — from seed/early stage through scaled, high-revenue businesses — but is profiled as an early-stage (seed/pre-seed) investor with a ~$5M typical check.
  • Firm's own description: "Mike has invested in numerous companies, from start-up through $1B in revenue, across multiple areas."
  • Values operating credibility — his own experience as a software-company president and services-company CFO informs a hands-on, board-level partnership approach.
  • Geographically anchored in the Boston/New England ecosystem, where he is repeatedly ranked among the region's leading investors.
