Michael Lavin

Michael Lavin founded and leads Germin8 Ventures, a purpose-driven venture capital firm focused on food, agriculture, health, and frontier science. Germin8 describes him as overseeing investing, operations, and strategy, while actively participating on boards of portfolio companies including Avalo AI, Andes Bio, AgriWebb, Brightseed, Bushel, ENKO Chem, Matterworks AI, and MyAgData.

Before Germin8, Lavin worked as an investment banker and consultant at Mesirow Financial, advising founder- and family-owned companies as well as Fortune 500 corporations across technology, agrifood, finance, and other verticals. Germin8 says he also served on an executive team leading internal corporate development advisory and M&A for Mesirow Financial.

Lavin’s food and agriculture focus is described as rooted in growing up around the industry, working across the value chain, and completing agribusiness-related coursework. Public profiles also note that he received bachelor’s and master’s degrees in finance and studied at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign College of Business.

Beyond investing, Lavin works with philanthropic and policy organizations on food security and population-health issues. In June 2025, National 4-H Council announced that he joined its Board of Trustees; Germin8 also notes his work with the State of Alaska on food security initiatives and his service on National 4-H Council’s Investment Subcommittee.

• Germin8 reserves significant capital for follow-on rounds. In the 2021 Global AgInvesting interview, Lavin said the firm reserves two-thirds of capital for follow-ons and had done at least pro rata in every subsequent round for companies that raised follow-on financing.
• Lavin avoids incremental or novelty technology. In the AgFunder 2024 interview, he said Germin8 looks for technologies that are “built for purpose,” solve significant needs, improve the user’s world, and do not force unnecessary change.
• Priority thesis areas listed by Germin8 include AI/ML from point of care to plate, supply-chain access and optimization, next-generation crop productivity, sustainable protein, crop and food-loss prevention, restoration of agricultural and natural ecosystems, embedded finance, and upstream energy or production-efficiency technologies.
