Background
Michael P. Murphy is the Founder, Managing Partner, and CEO of Rosecliff Ventures, a New York–based alternative asset management firm he co-founded in 2016 with Michael Caso. A native New Yorker, Murphy began his financial-services career in fixed income at Oppenheimer and spent more than two decades as a financial-services entrepreneur — starting and operating an investment banking firm, a hedge fund (long/short strategies), a broker-dealer, and a wealth-management business before turning to technology investing. Rosecliff grew directly out of his personal angel-investing track record, after his first several angel deals succeeded.
Under Murphy, Rosecliff has scaled into a diversified platform reported at roughly $800M–$1B in assets under management, spanning venture capital, private equity, and credit strategies across 100+ portfolio companies. He chairs the firm's Management Committee and co-heads its Investment Committee, and sits on the boards of portfolio companies including SquareFoot, Fordays, Tortoise, and Cargo. The firm markets a "lifetime support" model, reserving a majority of its capital for follow-on investments and backing companies from seed through exit.
Murphy also built out Rosecliff's public-markets ambitions: he served as founding sponsor and CEO of Rosecliff Acquisition Corp I (Nasdaq: RCLF), a SPAC that went public in 2021 and pursued a merger with ground-transportation software company Gett. He is a regular markets commentator on Fox Business Network, where he discusses private equity and venture-capital trends.
Murphy earned a Bachelor of Science in Finance from Hofstra University; some profiles also associate him with the D'Amore-McKim School of Business at Northeastern University. He resides in New York City.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests primarily at Seed and Series A, but explicitly designed to support companies "from entry to exit" across later, secondary, and pre-IPO rounds — reserving a majority of fund capital for follow-on investments.
- In the firm's own words, Rosecliff seeks to "create positive economic impact and long-term value for our investors and portfolio companies," targeting "high growth businesses that are creating disruptive technology in the financial, consumer, healthcare, and software industries."
- Core sectors: fintech, consumer/consumer health, healthcare, and software/SaaS, with growing exposure to AI and frontier technologies (e.g., the $350M Rosecliff Frontier Technologies Fund I).
- Typically a co-investor rather than a lead, writing checks generally in the ~$100K–$10M range and frequently syndicating alongside other institutional and angel investors.
- Differentiates via deep Wall Street trading/capital-markets expertise, a high-profile athlete/celebrity LP network, and a SPAC platform enabling private-to-public transitions.
