Background

Michael Skokan spent his entire ~35-year career with Hy-Vee, Inc., the Iowa-based, employee-owned supermarket chain. He started in 1986 as a part-time courtesy clerk and checker/stocker at the Grand Avenue Hy-Vee in West Des Moines (and a Cedar Falls store), working intermittently while attending college. He holds a degree in accounting from the University of Northern Iowa and is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA).

In 1993, Skokan joined Hy-Vee's corporate executive staff as an internal auditor and rose through the accounting department over the following two decades. In 2011 he was named Senior Vice President, Chief Financial Officer and Treasurer, and was made a permanent member of Hy-Vee's Board of Directors and Executive Committee. In 2013 he was elected Executive Vice President, Chief Financial Officer and Treasurer, the role he held until retirement.

As CFO, Skokan oversaw Hy-Vee's retirement and benefits programs for more than 20 years and led the transformation of the company's retirement offering from a basic savings structure into a full 401(k) plan focused on helping employees save — the fiduciary/administrator responsibility that underlies the "Plan Administrator" label. He was recognized by the Business Record as Deloitte "CFO of the Year," and was inducted into the Hy-Vee Hall of Fame in 2015 and again in 2021.

Skokan retired in mid-December 2021, alongside fellow executive Jay Marshall, as part of a broader Hy-Vee leadership succession (Andy Schreiner succeeded him as SVP, CFO and Treasurer). Both retiring executives were publicly thanked by then-chairman/CEO Randy Edeker as "trusted leaders of our executive team for many years."

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • No public evidence exists that Michael Skokan operates as an angel or venture investor, publishes an investment thesis, or writes checks into startups. This section cannot be substantiated and no thesis should be attributed to him.
  • His professional "investment" focus was fiduciary stewardship of Hy-Vee's employee 401(k)/retirement plan assets — modernizing the plan, expanding participation, and improving employees' retirement savings outcomes over a 20+ year period.
  • Any founder-facing framing (stages, check sizes, "what makes him say yes") is not applicable absent verified angel activity.

Notable Investments

  • None verifiable. No portfolio companies, angel deals, or startup rounds are associated with this Michael Skokan in public sources. (If seed/angel deals appear in your database attributed to this contact, they should be re-verified — likely mis-mapped from venture investor Michael Skok of Underscore VC.)
