Michael Troy

Mike Troy is the Managing Director of Geekdom Fund, a San Antonio–based early-stage venture capital firm he has helped run since roughly 2013–2014. Geekdom Fund invests in early-stage B2B tech startups and continues to support them through Series A and B, and has co-invested alongside well-known firms including Andreessen Horowitz, Mark Cuban Companies, Sierra Ventures, and Foundry Group. The fund positions itself as "the most helpful investor on your cap table," pairing a dedicated partner with each portfolio company and running programming such as its annual "Fundapalooza" gathering.

Before venture, Troy was CEO of FlashScan3D, a contract research and development firm specializing in 3D imaging (operating from 2006 until December 2019). The company applied 3D imaging to biometric and forensic-science problems, and its R&D was funded by agencies including IARPA, the Department of Homeland Security, the U.S. Army, the Department of Defense, the National Institute of Justice, and the National Science Foundation. That deep-tech and government-funded research background is reflected in his continued interest in robotics, autonomous machines, and frontier technology.

Troy earned a Bachelor of Science in Political Economy of Natural Resources from the University of California, Berkeley (class of 1994). Beyond writing checks, he takes active board and advisory roles across the portfolio — reported board/observer/advisor seats include MP Cloud Technologies, FunnelAI, Third Corner, SubjectWell, MR Presta, Parlevel Systems, Braustin Homes, and Place.

• Invests at pre-seed and seed, writing roughly $50K–$500K initial checks and reserving to support winners through Series A.
• Concentrates on B2B software/SaaS, with additional appetite for robotics, exoskeletons, autonomous machines, deep tech, and blockchain; deliberately steers clear of B2C and e-commerce.
• Targets "world-changing, huge ideas" with billion-dollar potential in winner-take-all or winner-take-most markets where a dominant player emerges via network effects and scale, ideally riding a large societal or technological shift.
• Bets on team quality above all — "complete teams that are all-in" and founders in the "top 0.01% in terms of resourcefulness," using demonstrated pre-investment progress as the key success signal.
• Focuses on North America (primarily the U.S., occasionally Canada), with a strong footprint in Texas and the San Antonio ecosystem tied to the Geekdom coworking/community brand.
• Emphasizes hands-on help — being "the most helpful investors on the cap table" through dedicated partner support, a 60+ company network, and pitch, talent, and grant-writing assistance.
