Background
Michael Yang is a seasoned venture investor with over 20 years of experience across three major VC platforms: OMERS Ventures, Comcast Ventures, and Atlas Venture. He holds an MBA from Harvard Business School and a BS in Economics from The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. Before entering venture capital, Yang worked as a management consultant at A.T. Kearney and served as an e-commerce and interactive marketing partnerships consultant at AOL during the early internet era. He also held a Senior Director role at Zaplet (acquired by MetricStream in 2004) before transitioning fully into investing.
Yang began his venture capital career in 2002 at Atlas Venture in Boston, focusing on early-stage IT and enterprise software companies. He subsequently joined Yahoo!, where he served as Vice President and General Manager of Yahoo! Health within the Media Group and the Local Markets & Commerce Division from approximately 2005 to 2008. In 2009, he joined Comcast Ventures as a Managing Director, where he launched the firm's Bay Area presence and invested across ecommerce, digital health, virtual reality, and Internet of Things over nearly a decade.
In January 2019, Yang joined OMERS Ventures as Managing Partner to launch its U.S. office in Palo Alto, California. He quickly expanded the firm's North American footprint, becoming Head of North America in 2022 (incorporating the Toronto team) and opening a New York City office. In August 2023, he was promoted to Head of all Venture Capital at OMERS, replacing Damien Steel. Yang departed OMERS Ventures on July 21, 2025, as part of a broader strategic shift by the Canadian pension fund to refocus investment activity on Canadian markets while scaling back U.S. operations. His departure was among several layoffs from the firm's Bay Area team during mid-2025.
Investment Thesis & Focus
Yang's investment philosophy centers on early-to-mid-stage B2B software and tech-enabled services. His primary sector interests include:
At OMERS Ventures, Yang championed a "company creation" model, co-founding startups alongside corporate partners rather than solely providing capital. He also co-developed the "Second Opinion" health-tech newsletter focused on healthcare innovation trends. He prioritizes financial discipline, founder-investor alignment, and mission-driven companies.
- Health Tech / Digital Health: A 20-year focus area; Yang has deep expertise in healthcare navigation, tech-enabled health services, and companies serving the healthcare value chain. He has invested in health tech across multiple cycles and served on boards of companies like Accolade and Healthline.
- Insurtech: Investments in next-generation insurance platforms, including personal auto insurance (Clearcover), workers' compensation (Foresight), and commercial insurance (Joyn Insurance).
- Fintech: Broad interest in financial technology companies at various stages.
- B2B SaaS / Enterprise Software: Vertical software, AI-driven enterprise tools, and data infrastructure companies.
- Proptech / Construction Tech: Interest in real estate technology and construction partnerships, including companies supporting essential workers (e.g., Landed, focused on homeownership for educators).
