Background

Michelle R. Clayman is the Founder, Managing Partner and Chief Investment Officer of New Amsterdam Partners LLC, an institutional equity money-management firm she established in New York in 1986. The firm manages roughly $316 million in regulatory assets with a small team of about ten people, offering US large-cap and mid-cap strategies to institutional investors. Its founding thesis was to bridge what Clayman calls "the chasm" between quantitative and fundamental stock analysis — combining disciplined quantitative screening with fundamental judgment to drive stock selection. The firm has also been active for many years in socially responsible / ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) mandates.

Born and raised in England, Clayman earned a degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE) from the University of Oxford (MA Oxon) and worked in commercial banking at Bank of America in London before moving to the United States. She received her MBA from Stanford University's Graduate School of Business (1979). She then joined Salomon Brothers, starting in sales and trading before moving into the firm's then-nascent quantitative equity research group, where she spent roughly six and a half years and rose to Vice President and Supervisory Analyst in Equity Research — the experience that shaped New Amsterdam Partners' quant-plus-fundamental approach. She holds the CFA designation.

Beyond her firm, Clayman is a prominent figure in the quantitative-investing community and in women's causes. She is a past President and board member of the Society of Quantitative Analysts and a board member of the Institute for Quantitative Research in Finance (the "Q-Group"). She endowed and chairs the Michelle R. Clayman Institute for Gender Research at Stanford University, was appointed to Stanford's Board of Trustees in 2018, and has served as chair of the Girl Scout Council of Greater New York. She was the first woman to receive Stanford GSB's Excellence in Leadership Award (2008) and received the National Council for Research on Women's "Making a Difference for Women Award" (2010). She has also co-authored *Corporate Finance: A Practical Approach* and its companion workbook (CFA Institute Investment Series).

It is worth flagging a data-quality note: the stub described Clayman as an "Angel Investor" focused on "Seed Round" deals. Research does not support that. Her verifiable career is as an institutional public-equity manager, not a startup/angel investor. Founders seeking pre-seed or seed capital are unlikely to be a fit.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Blends quant and fundamental research: New Amsterdam Partners was founded on the belief that "an intellectually rigorous and disciplined blend of quantitative and fundamental investment research will produce superior stock selection." Clayman describes the firm as built to "combine the best of both worlds."
  • Investable universe: Publicly traded US large-cap and mid-cap equities managed in institutional separate accounts / composites — not private companies or venture rounds.
  • ESG / socially responsible investing: A long-standing capability; the firm has managed what was historically called SRI and is now ESG-oriented mandates.
  • Performance- and evidence-driven: Clayman's career and firm are grounded in measurable, quantitative performance rather than relationship-driven allocation — she has emphasized objective measurement and disciplined process throughout her career.
  • Not a startup check-writer: No stated startup check size, stage, or founder-facing pitch process — the firm serves institutional allocators, not entrepreneurs raising equity.

Notable Investments

  • US Large-Cap and Mid-Cap equity strategies — the firm's core institutional composites of publicly traded US stocks.
  • Socially Responsible / ESG mandates — the firm has long managed SRI/ESG-screened equity portfolios; its name appears in Calvert socially responsible fund filings from the late 2000s, consistent with sub-advisory / index-related work in that space.
