Background
Michelle Gramatke is a Chartered Accountant with more than 25 years of financial and executive experience, the bulk of it in the Calgary energy sector. She served as Chief Financial Officer of JOG Capital, a Calgary private-equity firm, from 2004 until August 2020. During that period JOG deployed more than CAD $1.3 billion across six energy-focused funds over roughly 14 years, backing junior and mid-size oil and gas producers in Western Canada. Ownership records indicate Gramatke held a significant equity stake (reported in the 25–50% range) in Jog Capital Corp.
Before JOG, Gramatke built an international finance career. Between roughly 1996 and 2001 she was CFO of PricewaterhouseCoopers Central Asia and Deputy CFO of a NASDAQ-listed telecommunications company with operations in Russia, and earlier served as a Manager with PricewaterhouseCoopers in Moscow. She began her career at KPMG in Calgary, where she focused on Canadian upstream oil and gas, construction and mining companies — the audit and advisory grounding that shaped her later work as a finance executive in capital-intensive resource businesses.
JOG Capital was rebranded as Carbon Infrastructure Partners (CIP) in 2020, pivoting from pure oil and gas private equity toward the full "carbon lifecycle" — pairing hydrocarbon production with carbon capture and storage. The rebrand is led by Managing Partners Craig Golinowski (President) and Ryan Crawford, with Kel Johnston and David Moyes. Gramatke's tenure as CFO ended around the time of this transition.
Today Gramatke sits as an Independent Director of Surge Energy Inc., a Calgary-listed oil producer, where she serves on the Audit Committee and the Compensation, Nominating and Corporate Governance Committee — a natural extension of her CFO background into public-company governance.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- As CFO rather than a check-writing angel, Gramatke's "investing" was through JOG Capital's private-equity funds, which financed junior and mid-size Western Canadian oil and gas producers — growth and buildout capital, not seed-stage venture.
- The firm's stated strategy (post-rebrand as Carbon Infrastructure Partners): invest "across the entire carbon lifecycle, from hydrocarbon-based energy production through to carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS)."
- Sector conviction is squarely energy and decarbonization infrastructure — the firm targets "risk-adjusted returns across the carbon life cycle, from responsibly sourced energy production to industrial decarbonization."
- Geographically concentrated in Western Canada / Alberta, reflecting the Calgary oil-patch network the partners have worked in for 14+ years.
Notable Investments
- Surge Energy Inc. — Calgary-listed conventional oil producer; a JOG-associated portfolio company where Gramatke now serves as an independent director.
- InPlay Oil Corp. — Western Canadian light-oil producer named among JOG Capital's portfolio holdings.
- Spry (Spry Energy) — participated in a private placement financing (1,670,000 common shares for $10,020,000) associated with JOG.
- Broadly, more than CAD $1.3 billion invested across six JOG Capital energy funds in junior and mid-size producers over ~14 years.
