Background
Mike Gerend is a longtime operating executive and investor in the health, fitness, and active-lifestyle sectors. He is currently a Partner at LFE Capital, a Minneapolis- and Naples, FL–based growth equity firm founded in 2001 by Leslie Frecon that provides expansion and buyout capital to health-and-wellness businesses—one of the earliest women-owned PE managers focused on female-owned and -managed companies. At LFE, Gerend brings a blend of operating and private equity experience, working actively with management teams on growth, distribution, and exit planning.
From 2017 he served as an Operating Partner at Norwest Equity Partners (NEP), joining alongside Mark Thom to build out NEP's active-lifestyle investment platform. In that role he sourced and evaluated deals and worked hands-on with portfolio companies on strategic planning, growth, and corporate governance, drawing on more than 25 years of consumer and active-lifestyle leadership.
His operating résumé is substantial: President and Chief Operating Officer of Life Time Fitness (roughly 2003–2009), where he helped scale one of the most recognized health-and-fitness brands in the U.S.; CEO of Edge Fitness, an NEP-backed regional health-club platform; and President of Schwan's Home Service, the largest frozen-food home-delivery business in the country, where he doubled the online business and launched the Schwan's Cares fundraising program. Earlier, he was CEO of Champion Air and Director of Regional Planning at Northwest Airlines.
Gerend holds a Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of Notre Dame and an MBA from the Wisconsin School of Business at the University of Wisconsin–Madison.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests behind the active-lifestyle, health, wellness, fitness, and consumer themes—categories he describes and treats as durable and "recession-resistant" with unmet societal need.
- Operates on an operating-partner / operational-value-creation model rather than financial engineering. LFE Capital's stated philosophy: "We create value through operational excellence, not financial engineering," positioning itself as "active partners — not passive investors."
- Targets profitable, growth-stage companies (LFE: ~$5–50M revenue) seeking capital plus operating help to scale operations, expand distribution, and reach a liquidity event; flexible on minority or control positions.
- Says "yes" to businesses led by strong management teams in health/fitness and consumer where his operating playbook (distribution, brand, unit economics) can accelerate growth.
- On the Wahoo Fitness deal he framed the thesis around the fitness-technology intersection: *"Wahoo has always been a creative force at the center of where fitness and technology collide, and they are only just getting started."*
