Background

Mike Hoffmann is a private equity investor with more than 15 years of experience investing in software and broader technology businesses. He spent over a decade at Thoma Bravo, one of the largest software-focused investment firms, where he rose from Vice President (joining in August 2014) to Principal (January 2018) and then to Partner (January 2022) on the firm's flagship buyout funds. In that role he led and helped lead control investments across software, infrastructure, cybersecurity, and data and IT services.

Before Thoma Bravo, Hoffmann was an investor at Providence Equity Partners, where he focused on technology, media, and information/telecommunications services, and earlier he worked as an investment banker at Citigroup Global Markets. Over his career he has served on the boards of numerous portfolio companies, including ConnectWise, Verint, Talend, Qlik, N-able, Calabrio, and SolarWinds, and previously Riverbed Technology and Empirix.

In June 2026, Hoffmann joined global investment firm Permira as a Partner on its Technology team, based in Permira's Menlo Park office on Sand Hill Road. At Permira he works across the firm's full technology playbook — from large-cap and upper-middle-market buyouts to growth equity — with particular emphasis on large-scale software transformations and AI-enabled businesses and infrastructure (including areas such as data centers).

He earned an AB in Economics from Harvard University (Harvard College) and an MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Invests in established, scaled software and technology companies through buyouts and growth equity — this is institutional PE capital, not seed/angel checks.
  • Core sectors: application and infrastructure software, cybersecurity, data/IT services, and increasingly AI-enabled enterprise businesses; at Permira his mandate explicitly includes AI-enabled businesses and infrastructure such as data centers.
  • Known for a channel-led / go-to-market operational thesis — he spoke at The Channel Company's NexGen 2019 conference on channel-led approaches, reflecting Thoma Bravo's playbook of scaling software companies through partner ecosystems (e.g., ConnectWise's MSP channel).
  • On his own move: *"Permira has built a distinctive and highly successful technology investing platform... I'm excited to join the Menlo Park team."*
  • Recognized by GrowthCap as one of the Top Software Investors of 2025, an award weighing career trajectory, breadth of experience, and ability to scale companies and generate exits.
