Background

Mike Pehl co-founded Guidepost Growth Equity and currently serves as Co-Founder and Senior Advisor. Guidepost says he has served on the boards of more than a dozen private and public technology companies and brings both investor and operating experience with growth-stage businesses.

Before Guidepost, Pehl was a Partner at Advent International, where he was involved in managing the firm’s technology portfolio. Earlier in his career, he helped build SAP America as a co-founder and later founded International Consulting Solutions, an SAP implementation and business-process consultancy that was sold to Deloitte & Touche Consulting Group.

Pehl also held senior operating roles during the internet-services era. He was CEO and Chairman of i-Cube, took the company public, and then served as President and COO of Razorfish after Razorfish merged with i-Cube. A 2002 InternetNews profile reported that he later joined Dirig Software as CEO after prior roles at SAP America, ICS, i-Cube, and Razorfish.

Guidepost’s biography says Pehl grew up in Germany and moved to the United States in the early 1980s. I did not find a primary-source education record.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Guidepost’s stated focus is to “optimize value creation by investing in scalability and accelerating growth.”
  • The firm invests $20M-$80M of equity into capital-efficient, growth-stage companies, typically to provide shareholder liquidity and fund growth initiatives.
  • Sector focus is application and infrastructure software, tech-enabled services, and data services.
  • Guidepost emphasizes partnership with owner-entrepreneurs of successful, market-defining businesses, providing “insight, experience, capital, and encouragement.”
  • Operational value creation is central to the model: Guidepost highlights talent hiring, public-company-caliber boards, product-management frameworks, flexible technology infrastructure, sales and marketing enhancement, geographic expansion, strategic finance, and acquisition integration.
  • Pehl’s own background suggests a bias toward founders/operators who are building scalable technology businesses and can benefit from hands-on operating support, especially around growth-stage execution.
