Background

Michael "Mish" Shedlock is an American economist, financial analyst, and one of the most widely followed independent macroeconomic commentators in the United States. He has been an economic blogger since 2003 and is the author and publisher of MishTalk (formerly "Mish's Global Economic Trend Analysis"), where he typically posts several articles a day analyzing interest rates, monetary policy, inflation, employment data, housing, and precious metals — generally through an Austrian-economics and libertarian, free-market/small-government lens.

Since 2007 he has served as a registered Investment Advisor Representative for SitkaPacific Capital Management, LLC, a Seattle-based registered investment advisor whose stated aim is strong performance with low volatility regardless of market direction. Alongside this, he sits on the Board of Advisors of Deep Knowledge Investing as an economics advisor. He has contributed commentary to outlets and platforms including The Epoch Times, Financial Sense, Seeking Alpha, Investing.com, and TalkMarkets.

Shedlock built his reputation on a handful of well-timed macro calls. In summer 2006 he called the top of the U.S. residential housing bubble, and he called the market bottom in March 2009. In 2010 the New York Times cited him — alongside Barry Ritholtz and Calculated Risk — in its "Do-It-Yourself Macroeconomics," the #1 entry in the paper's annual Year in Ideas feature, recognizing independent analysts who read the economy better than many formally trained economists. His blog was also named to Time Magazine's "Best 25 Financial Blogs" (2009) and cited by CNBC and other outlets.

Outside of finance, Shedlock is an accomplished photographer with more than 80 magazine and book-cover credits (portfolio at MishMoments.com). His first wife, Joanne, died of ALS in 2012; he raised roughly $500,000 for the Les Turner ALS Foundation and was named its 2012 Man of the Year.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Global-macro, top-down orientation: His analysis centers on central-bank policy, interest rates, inflation (CPI/PPI), jobs reports, and housing — with a recurring bias toward sound money, fiscal prudence, and skepticism of aggressive monetary intervention.
  • Austrian / free-market philosophy: He describes himself as "a believer in free markets and small government," writing "from a Libertarian and Austrian economist point of view."
  • Defensive, low-volatility asset management: Through SitkaPacific, the emphasis is on capital preservation and "strong performance and low volatility, regardless of market direction" rather than growth-stage venture bets.
  • Recurrent asset preferences: Long-running constructive views on gold and precious metals as a hedge, caution on debt-fueled asset bubbles, and detailed monthly breakdowns of official economic data.

Notable Investments

  • No public record of startup/angel or seed-stage portfolio companies was found. Shedlock's work is macroeconomic research and public-markets advisory (via SitkaPacific), not venture investing.
  • His publicly discussed positioning historically leans toward precious metals (gold/silver) and defensive allocations — consistent with his sound-money views — but specific holdings are not publicly disclosed as a venture portfolio would be.
