Background

Mike Vogel (Michael Andrew Vogel, born January 1959, British) is a veteran of the UK asset-management industry with roughly four decades of experience. He began his career at M&G before moving to Prolific Financial Management, where he rose to become group chief executive in 1992. In April 1995 he was appointed Chief Executive of the Framlington Group, one of the UK's best-known active fund houses of that era, a role he held until June 2003.

On leaving Framlington in 2003, Vogel co-founded Elcot Capital Management Limited (incorporated 4 July 2003) with Neil Birrell. Elcot is a privately owned, permanent-capital investment firm based in London that deploys its own balance sheet over the long term rather than running a conventional time-limited fund. Its principals bring, on average, more than 30 years of financial-services experience, and the firm concentrates its activity in the asset-management, wealth-management and capital-markets/fintech sectors it knows best — typically seeding, backing or buying significant stakes in boutique financial-services businesses.

Over two decades, Vogel has used Elcot to take board-level positions across its portfolio. UK corporate filings show his directorships at Premier Miton Group PLC (2007–2021), Olivetree Financial Group (2012–2015), OTAS Technologies and Liquidnet Technologies Europe (2015–2017), Janeplan (2019–2022) and Atlantic House Group (2021–2026), reflecting the hands-on, chairman/board-seat style with which he supports the companies Elcot backs. His most visible success was Premier Asset Management, which Elcot built into Premier Miton Group, an LSE-listed asset manager.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Invests Elcot's own permanent capital with a long-term, multi-strategy approach — not bound by typical fund vintages or exit clocks.
  • Backs and seeds financial-services and capital-markets businesses: asset/wealth managers, derivatives and structured-product specialists, and capital-markets/fintech technology firms.
  • Takes positions ranging from seed and minority strategic stakes through to controlling majority interests (e.g., raising Premier Asset Management from ~25% to over 50%).
  • Adds value through active, board-level involvement, frequently taking a chairman or director seat to drive the next phase of growth.
  • Concentrates on sectors where the principals have deep operating experience (30+ years), favoring businesses he can help scale rather than passive financial bets.

Notable Investments

  • Premier Asset Management → Premier Miton Group PLC — Elcot acquired ~25.1% in 2007 and lifted its stake to 50.2% in 2014 (buying out Electra Private Equity); the firm floated on the LSE in 2016 and merged with Miton Group in 2019. Vogel chaired the business 2007–2021. Elcot's flagship win.
  • Catley Lakeman Securities / Atlantic House — Elcot took a significant stake in the derivatives and structured-products specialist (whose fund arm is Atlantic House Investments) to fund its next growth phase; Vogel became a director of Atlantic House Group in 2021.
  • Olivetree Financial Group — Elcot Fund Limited acquired a minority/strategic stake in the capital-markets brokerage and technology firm (Vogel a director 2012–2015).
  • OTAS Technologies — capital-markets analytics/fintech business (Vogel a director 2015–2017; OTAS was acquired by Liquidnet in 2017).
  • Liquidnet Technologies Europe — Vogel served as a director 2015–2017, tied to the OTAS relationship.
  • Janeplan — personalised dog-food subscription business, an example of an occasional non-financial private investment (Vogel a director 2019–2022).
  • Soundview Holdings — financial-services holding vehicle (Vogel a director 2014–2015).
