Background
Mitchell Dann has spent more than 20 years working with healthcare start-ups as a venture capitalist, advisor, entrepreneur, and executive. He began his investing career in 1982, joining Investment Advisers, Inc. (IAI) in Minneapolis as a buy-side analyst covering emerging-growth companies in the Upper Midwest. In 1983 he co-founded IAI's venture capital arm, the IAI Venture Capital Group, where his investment focus was healthcare. He was responsible for investments in 18 companies and several venture partnerships, serving as Vice President, Partner, and Managing Partner; under his leadership assets under management grew to more than $150 million between 1983 and 1991.
In 1991 he formed M. Dann & Co. to provide strategic, financing, and management assistance to emerging medical-device and healthcare-service firms. He became an operator as well as an investor: he is a co-founder of Urologix, a Minneapolis prostate-therapy device company, where he served on the board for roughly 14 years and as Chairman from 1993 to 2003. In 2002 he co-founded ValenTx, Inc., a developer of a minimally invasive endoluminal bypass sleeve for obesity and metabolic disease, and has served as its Chairman since 2008.
Dann founded Sapient Capital Management LLC in 2000 (with the associated fund Sapient Capital, L.P.). The firm is a small, healthcare-dedicated venture fund investing in medical-device and healthcare businesses, and it operates from Wilson, Wyoming, in the Jackson Hole valley. In addition to ValenTx, he has served on the boards of TranS1 (spine devices) and GRAFTcath (vascular-access devices for hemodialysis, later Hemosphere). Consistent with his Wyoming base, his public LinkedIn presence describes him as an "Investor and Ski Patroller" and lists instruction with the American Avalanche Institute, suggesting he now invests selectively while based in the mountains rather than running a large active fund.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Sector: Invests "exclusively in healthcare, with an emphasis on medical device firms targeting novel solutions to satisfy large unmet medical needs" (Sapient Capital's own description).
- Stage & check size: Seed and early-stage venture, plus follow-on rounds in existing portfolio companies. Disclosed Sapient participations range from ~$1M seed rounds (e.g., Gui.de) up to multi-million follow-on and debt financings (e.g., a $7.5M debt round and a ~$9.35M venture round in device companies) — indicating flexible, relatively modest angel/VC-scale checks rather than large lead-round sizing.
- What makes him say yes: Deep, hands-on medtech domain conviction — he backs (and often co-founds or chairs) companies solving large, unmet clinical needs with differentiated devices, and he tends to take an active board/operator role rather than passive capital.
- Co-investing style: Historically syndicates with strategic and institutional healthcare investors — documented co-investors include EDF Ventures, Affinity Capital Management, Ascension Ventures, Kaiser Permanente Ventures, and the Knight Foundation.
Notable Investments
- Urologix — Co-founder and long-time Chairman (1993–2003) of the Minneapolis prostate-therapy (transurethral microwave) device company; publicly traded (Nasdaq: ULGX) before later restructuring and going private as Urologix LLC (2016).
- ValenTx, Inc. — Co-founded 2002; Chairman since 2008. Developer of a minimally invasive, endoluminal gastric-bypass sleeve for obesity, hypertension, and type-2 diabetes. Sapient participated in later financings (including a 2014 debt round).
- TranS1 — Minimally invasive spine-surgery device company; IPO'd on the Nasdaq in October 2007 (symbol "TSON") raising ~$86M net; later merged with Baxano to form Baxano Surgical.
- GRAFTcath / Hemosphere — Vascular-access devices for hemodialysis; Sapient participated in a ~$9.35M venture round (2010).
- Gui.de — ~$1M seed round (2013), an example of his smaller, early-stage angel-style checks outside pure medtech.
