Background
Mitchell Green is the Founder and Managing Partner of Lead Edge Capital, a growth equity firm he launched in 2009 that invests in software, internet, and tech-enabled services businesses globally. The firm has raised roughly $9 billion in total capital since inception, most recently closing Fund VII with $3.5 billion in commitments — its largest fund to date. Green oversees the firm's global activities and sits on its Investment, Disposition, and Management Committees. He is based out of Lead Edge's Santa Barbara office.
Before founding Lead Edge, Green built his career on investment teams at Bessemer Venture Partners — where he helped build out the firm's sourcing program — and at Eastern Advisors, a Tiger Management-affiliated ("Tiger Cub") hedge fund seeded by Julian Robertson. He began in investment banking, holding positions at UBS and Barrington Associates.
Green holds a B.A. in Economics from Williams College and an M.B.A. in Marketing from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He is a former nationally ranked alpine ski racer and a World Economic Forum Partner. He serves on the boards of the U.S. Ski & Snowboard Foundation and the Santa Barbara Museum of Art (and has been associated with the Laguna Blanca School in Santa Barbara).
Lead Edge is notable for its unusual model: a network of 700+ strategic limited partners (executives and operators) who help source and diligence deals — an approach Green often frames as a "Moneyball" style of investing built on relentless, data-driven cold outreach rather than traditional warm-intro VC.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests at growth stage, not seed — targeting profitable or efficiently scaling companies with strong revenue growth, high gross margins, and recurring revenue.
- Applies the "Lead Edge 8" screen: quantitative criteria such as $10M+ in revenue, ~25%+ year-over-year growth, and ~70%+ gross margins.
- Writes large checks (historically ~$10M–$75M; newer funds target ~$50M–$400M) and will take either minority or majority/control positions.
- Sectors: software, internet, consumer, and tech-enabled services — including SaaS, enterprise, fintech, and marketplaces.
- Global mandate, including a notable willingness to invest in China (e.g., Alibaba, ByteDance) even amid geopolitical risk.
- Green publicly argues that "traditional VC is broken" and champions proactive, high-volume sourcing ("the art of effective cold calling") over relying on inbound warm intros.
- Contrarian on timing: he has said recessions are among the "best times to invest," arguing "fortunes are made during recession" by buying when others are forced to sell.
