Background
Mohamad Makhzoumi has spent essentially his entire career at New Enterprise Associates (NEA). He first joined the firm in 2000 as an undergraduate summer intern — reportedly working (initially unpaid) alongside Chuck Newhall, the founder of NEA's healthcare practice — while studying at the University of Pennsylvania, from which he graduated in 2001. Before returning to NEA full-time, he worked in leveraged finance and sponsor-led transactions, including roles as an analyst at UBS and an associate at Summit Partners.
At NEA he rose through the ranks to General Partner and eventually led the firm's global healthcare investing practice across both digital health / healthcare services and life sciences. In 2021 he and Tony Florence were elevated to Managing General Partner roles, and in 2023 he was named Co-President. On April 9, 2024, NEA announced that Makhzoumi and Florence would become Co-CEOs of the firm, with longtime leader Scott Sandell transitioning to Executive Chairman & Chief Investment Officer.
Makhzoumi is known for a "company-building" style of investing: several of his most notable portfolio companies — including Radiology Partners, Strive Health, and Curana Health — began as raw concepts incubated inside NEA's venture studio before being built into large operating businesses. He is based in NEA's Menlo Park office and also serves on the board of the Lucile Packard Foundation for Children's Health at Stanford.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests in healthcare services and healthcare technology, spanning early venture to late-stage growth — including hands-on incubation of companies from concept inside NEA's studio.
- Core themes: digital health, value-based care, kidney care, senior/Medicare Advantage-focused care, imaging, pharmacy services, and health data/analytics.
- Emphasizes backing and building around strong operators/founders and committing large amounts of capital over the long arc of a company's life (not one-time seed checks).
- Stated philosophy for founders raising capital: "pick the best partner, not the best term sheet" — he frames choosing a capital partner as "one of the most consequential decisions a founder can make."
Notable Investments
- Radiology Partners — physician-led radiology practice; incubated at NEA's venture studio, grew into a category leader in imaging.
- Strive Health — value-based kidney care company; also incubated at NEA.
- Curana Health — senior-living-focused care company; another NEA studio incubation.
