Background

Murat Erkurt is a co-founder and Managing Partner of Mediterra Capital Management Limited, an independent private equity firm he helped establish around 2010–2011 to focus on lower mid-market Turkish companies. Before founding Mediterra, he was a Managing Director in the Private Equity Division of Lehman Brothers. Across roughly three decades in the industry, he has invested in the United States, United Kingdom, Spain, Germany, Denmark, Czech Republic, Israel and Turkey.

Erkurt has an unusually technical and quantitative academic background for a private equity investor. He holds a BSc in Electrical Engineering from Middle East Technical University (ODTÜ), an MSc in Electrical Engineering from Northeastern University, a PhD in Mathematics from Imperial College London, and an MBA from Columbia Business School.

At Mediterra he has been closely involved in building and governing portfolio companies, serving on the boards of Sistem Global, Elba, Tavuk Dünyası, Terra Pizza and Uğurlu Balık (Lucky Fish). The firm he leads has invested in 16 portfolio companies with several bolt-on acquisitions and, per its own reporting, exited 8 of them via sales to international strategic investors and IPOs, generating what it describes as top-decile cash-on-cash returns among emerging-market PE funds.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Targets lower mid-market Turkish companies with enterprise values of ~€25M–€250M, typically taking control or significant stakes rather than seed/angel positions.
  • Three-pronged strategy: companies serving domestic consumption, export-oriented businesses, and providers of technology-enabled services (as articulated for Fund III in 2024).
  • Strong emphasis on Anatolian, often family-owned businesses where institutionalization, governance and bolt-on M&A can drive growth and eventual exit to strategic buyers or public markets.
  • Uses active board involvement and buy-and-build (bolt-on acquisitions) as core value-creation levers.
  • Backed repeatedly by development-finance cornerstone investors (IFC, EBRD, FMO), signaling an institutional, governance-heavy approach rather than opportunistic small-ticket investing.

Notable Investments

  • Tavuk Dünyası — Leading Turkish fast-casual chicken restaurant chain; Mediterra (via Global Restaurant Investments) acquired a ~51% stake.
  • Terra Pizza (formerly Pizza Pizza) — Second-largest Turkish pizza restaurant chain, ~140 restaurants across ~46 cities.

  • Elba — Portfolio company (industrials/manufacturing); Erkurt board member.
  • Uğurlu Balık / Lucky Fish — Seafood/aquaculture business; Erkurt board member.
