Background
Murray Beveridge Smith (born February 1969, British) is a UK financial-services professional with over 30 years in the industry. He has worked in financial services since 1992 and joined Leicester-based pensions and wealth-management firm Mattioli Woods in 1995, becoming the Group's first graduate trainee consultant. He holds an MA in accountancy. Early in his Mattioli Woods career he was responsible for the firm's marketing activities and managed its team of consultants, serving as the Group's Sales & Marketing Director.
When Mattioli Woods floated on London's AIM market in November 2005 (IPO price 132p), Smith was appointed to the plc board and went on to become Group Managing Director. He served roughly 15 years on the plc board and was closely involved in the Group's acquisition strategy — Mattioli Woods grew substantially through a long run of bolt-on acquisitions during this period. Public filings and press reports show he progressively reduced his shareholding as the share price rose well above the IPO level (e.g. selling tranches at 205p–235p in 2009–2010).
Seeking more balance, Smith stood down from the plc board at the October 2019 AGM, continuing in a full-time advisory and ambassadorial role focused on his own client portfolio and the Group's acquisitions strategy rather than board governance. Companies House records list him across more than 20 Mattioli Woods–group and trustee entities (e.g. Mattioli Woods Limited, Custodian Capital Limited, City Pensions Limited, Bank Street Trustees), all now resigned.
In 2025 he left Mattioli Woods and co-founded Castri Wealth Management (Castri WM Ltd), an independent, partner-led wealth-management firm based at Ivanhoe Office Park, Ashby-de-la-Zouch (LE65 2AB). Castri was founded by four partners — Alex Brown, Doug Ryan, Murray Smith and Scott Wakeling — several of whom (including Smith, Brown and Ryan) are Mattioli Woods alumni. Companies House shows Smith appointed a director of Castri WM Limited and Castri Trustees Limited from 1 April 2026.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Operates as a wealth manager / financial planner, not a startup angel or VC — the "Angel Investors / Seed Round" tag in the source data is not supported by any evidence found.
- At Castri, his focus is holistic, long-term financial planning for individuals, families, business owners and entrepreneurs: pensions and retirement planning, investment planning, protection and estate planning, and SSAS provision.
- Castri's stated approach emphasises "clear advice, personal relationships and long-term thinking," with a partner-led model in which clients deal directly with experienced advisers.
- His own stated passion, per Castri's team page: *"Murray's first passion is working closely with clients helping to steer them through the complexities of our financial world and its ever changing nature."*
- Where he most resembles a "dealmaker" is corporate M&A: at Mattioli Woods he helped drive an acquisition-led growth strategy, integrating smaller advisory and SIPP/SSAS businesses into the group.
Notable Investments
- Castri Wealth Management (2025) — co-founder and partner of the new independent firm; equity stake as founding partner.
- Mattioli Woods plc — long-standing shareholder/director following the 2005 AIM IPO; helped lead the group's acquisition strategy that consolidated numerous UK pension and wealth-advisory businesses.
- (No individual company deal names, rounds, or check sizes are publicly documented for him as an angel/seed investor.)
