Background

Nancy-Ann DeParle is one of the nation's leading experts on healthcare policy and finance, and she has built a career that spans the highest levels of government and private equity. She earned a B.A. with highest honors from the University of Tennessee — where she served as Student Body President — followed by a B.A. and M.A. in Politics and Economics from Balliol College, Oxford University, which she attended as a Rhodes Scholar, and a J.D. from Harvard Law School.

DeParle's public-service record is extensive. Under President Bill Clinton, she served as Administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (then HCFA) from 1997 to 2000, overseeing the roughly $870 billion Medicare and Medicaid programs and the launch of the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP). In the Obama administration, she served as Counselor to the President and Director of the White House Office of Health Reform (2009–2011), where she led the effort to enact the Affordable Care Act, and then as Assistant to the President and Deputy Chief of Staff for Policy (2011–2013). She also served six years as a Commissioner on the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission (MedPAC).

Her investing career predates her second tour in Washington: from 2001 to 2009 she was a Senior Advisor and Managing Director at JPMorgan Partners (JPMP) and its successor entities, working within the healthcare group and serving on portfolio company boards including CareMore, LHP Hospital Group, and MedQuest. In 2013 she co-founded Consonance Capital Partners alongside Mitchell Blutt, MD, Benjamin Edmands, and Stephen McKenna — partners with whom she had worked for over a decade at JPMorgan Partners. The founding team brings more than 90 years of combined private equity experience, concentrated in healthcare.

Beyond the firm, DeParle is a director of CVS Health (NYSE: CVS) and HCA Healthcare (NYSE: HCA), sits on the boards of several Consonance portfolio companies, serves on the Duke University Board of Trustees, and has held an academic role as a Senior Fellow and Adjunct Professor at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Invests exclusively in the U.S. healthcare industry, targeting "U.S. middle market companies that add sustainable value to the healthcare system."
  • Stage and structure: growth equity, leveraged buyouts, and recapitalizations — i.e., control and significant-minority private equity, not seed/early-stage angel checks.
  • Target companies generally have revenue of ~$25–500 million, with flexibility to invest outside that range.
  • Sub-sector breadth across healthcare: providers, payors, diagnostics, distribution, devices, specialty pharmaceuticals, outsourced services, and healthcare IT.
  • The firm's edge leans heavily on DeParle's and her partners' deep regulatory and policy expertise — an advantage in healthcare, where reimbursement and regulation drive outcomes.

Notable Investments

  • Psychiatric Medical Care — behavioral health management company; DeParle serves on the board.
  • Sellers Dorsey — national healthcare (Medicaid) consulting firm; DeParle serves on the board.
  • Priority OnDemand — medical transportation / mobile health platform; DeParle serves on the board.
  • Embark Behavioral Health — adolescent and young-adult mental and behavioral health provider; a CCP portfolio company on whose board she has served.
  • Integrated Telehealth Partners — telehealth/behavioral health services; affiliated CCP portfolio investment.
  • (Pre-CCP, at JPMorgan Partners) board roles included CareMore, LHP Hospital Group, and MedQuest.
