Narendra Gupta

Naren Gupta was an Indian-American technology entrepreneur turned venture capitalist. Born September 30, 1948, he earned a Bachelor of Technology in mechanical engineering from IIT Delhi (1969, where he won the President's Gold Medal), a Master of Science in aeronautics from the California Institute of Technology (1970), and a Ph.D. in applied mechanics from Stanford University (1974). He was named a distinguished alumnus of both IIT (1997) and Caltech (2004), was elected an IEEE Fellow in 1991, and served on the Caltech Board of Trustees from 2011 until his death.

In 1980 Gupta co-founded Integrated Systems Inc. (ISI), an embedded software company, which he led as president and CEO until 1994 and as chairman until 2000. ISI went public in 1990. After ISI merged with Wind River Systems in 2000 (Wind River was later acquired by Intel), Gupta served as vice chairman and, for a period, interim president and CEO. He also served as chairman of the board of Red Hat prior to its acquisition by IBM.

In 2006 Gupta co-founded Nexus Venture Partners, one of the first venture firms built explicitly around the US–India corridor, with offices in Menlo Park, Mumbai, and Bangalore. Under his leadership the firm grew to manage over $2 billion in assets and backed more than 200 companies. His investing thesis was that talent and technology transcend borders: pairing US company-building norms with Indian engineering talent to build globally competitive enterprises. He described his entry into venture capital as "really accidental," but built Nexus into a marquee early-stage franchise.

Gupta was also a philanthropist. In 2021 he and his wife, Vinita Gupta, established the Naren and Vinita Gupta Fellows Program at Caltech, supporting graduate students in engineering and applied science with a focus on AI and smart devices. He is survived by Vinita and their two daughters, Anneka and Serena.

• Global standards: Publicly stated he wanted "to hold every enterprise company coming out of India to global standards" — a lens that shaped Nexus's backing of category-defining SaaS companies.
• Long-term orientation: Formalized a fund structure specifically so portfolio companies could pursue longer-term strategies rather than short-term outcomes.
