Background

Nathan Krishnamurthy is a Partner on the investments team at Capital One Ventures (formerly branded Capital One Growth Ventures, "C1GV"), the corporate venture capital arm of Capital One Financial, headquartered in McLean, Virginia. He is based in San Francisco. He joined the group in 2015, near its founding, and has been described as instrumental in building the firm "from the ground up" — leading the design of its operating policies, governance model, risk framework, and investment process.

Before moving into venture, Nathan began his career in finance as an Investment Banking Analyst at Merrill Lynch, where he worked on financial modeling for mergers, leveraged buyouts, and public offerings. He earned his undergraduate degree from Colgate University (2007) and an MBA from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania (2015), after which he joined Capital One's venture team.

Within Capital One Ventures, Nathan has been a hands-on dealmaker, executing many of the firm's marquee transactions and becoming an internal thought leader across several verticals — notably blockchain, B2B payments, and rewards and loyalty programs. In 2018 he was recognized by Global Corporate Venturing as one of its "Rising Stars" (ranked #17), an industry list of emerging corporate venture investors.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Invests strategically on behalf of Capital One — prioritizing companies whose technology or business could integrate with Capital One's business and infrastructure, not just deliver financial return. In his words: *"Through strategic investing, we look to harness the potential of innovative companies that could integrate well with Capital One's business and infrastructure."*
  • Core areas: fintech, payments (including B2B payments), data & analytics, financial services infrastructure, AI, and rewards/loyalty; Capital One Ventures broadly favors data, technology, and financial services companies.
  • Has been a vocal proponent of blockchain beyond cryptocurrency, citing *"many compelling benefits — including cost, resiliency, speed and security — and application of the technology could span far beyond virtual currencies to such areas as payments and lending, smart contracts, records management, and investment platforms."*
  • Looks for traction and engagement signals as proxies for durability. On the Mindtrip deal he noted: *"Strong engagement from travelers can be predictors of retention, and we find Mindtrip's early traction encouraging."*
  • Writes minority strategic checks across a wide stage range — from seed rounds (e.g., Tuhk, Mindtrip) to large growth investments (e.g., Snowflake, ThoughtSpot) and structured deals (e.g., a convertible note in Inspirato).

Notable Investments

  • Snowflake — cloud data warehousing platform; one of C1GV's major investments (later a landmark IPO).
  • ThoughtSpot — analytics/business intelligence search platform; major C1GV investment.
  • Riskified — e-commerce fraud prevention and chargeback protection; major C1GV investment (later public).
  • Transactis — New York-based B2B payments / electronic billing provider; investment in 2016 (later acquired by Mastercard).
  • Inspirato (NASDAQ: ISPO) — luxury travel subscription brand; Capital One Ventures agreed to a $25M convertible note investment in August 2023, alongside a strategic partnership.
  • Mindtrip — AI-powered travel planning platform with B2B hotel tools; Capital One Ventures co-invested with United Airlines Ventures (part of ~$22.5M total funding), with Nathan quoted on the deal.
  • Tuhk Inc. — Canadian fintech building a payments fraud-collaboration platform; US$6M seed round (led by FINTOP) with participation from Capital One Ventures and Lloyds Banking Group.
