Background
Nathan Zhu earned a Bachelor of Arts in Economics modified with Engineering from Dartmouth College (2013–2017). He began his career in New York as an Investment Banking Analyst at Duff & Phelps (July 2017–July 2019), where he executed mergers-and-acquisitions transactions across the industrials, consumer, and hospitality sectors.
In September 2019, Cotton Creek Capital announced that it had hired Zhu as an Associate, part of a team expansion that immediately followed the August 2019 final close of Cotton Creek Capital Partners III, LP at $215 million in capital commitments. As an associate at the Austin-based firm, he supported deal execution and portfolio work on lower middle market buyouts and recapitalizations.
Zhu's time at Cotton Creek was relatively brief — roughly August/September 2019 through December 2020. He subsequently moved into operating-company finance: he was in Strategic Finance at OJO Labs (an Austin real-estate technology company) from December 2020 to January 2023, and since January 2023 has been Head of Finance / Vice President of Finance at ClosingLock, an Austin-based real-estate wire-fraud-prevention and secure-payments startup. (Some aggregator listings additionally associate him with "Mia Labs," reflecting more recent or overlapping affiliations.)
In short, Nathan Zhu is today a finance executive at venture-backed Austin tech companies rather than an active institutional or angel investor. Any outreach to him as an "investor" should account for the fact that his investing role (a junior PE associate seat) ended in 2020.
Investment Thesis & Focus
These points describe Cotton Creek Capital's strategy during Zhu's associate tenure (not personal angel activity):
- Stage/structure: Control-oriented lower middle market private equity — buyouts, management-backed recapitalizations, generational transfers of family-owned businesses, and growth capital for companies "at an inflection point of growth."
- Check size: ~$10–$40 million of equity per investment.
- Target company size: Businesses with $5–$15 million of EBITDA — i.e., established, profitable companies, not pre-revenue startups.
- Sectors: Manufacturing, value-added distribution, industrial, specialty chemicals, building products, food & beverage, and business services.
- What makes them say yes: Cotton Creek emphasizes an "active operational partnership," aligning with management teams on operational roadmaps while "preserving corporate identity," and seeking counterparties with a shared vision rather than purely a liquidity event. The firm cites 15+ years of experience investing in and advising privately held businesses.
