Background
Dr. Naveen Nishchal is a physician-turned-healthcare entrepreneur based in India's Delhi NCR region. He earned his MBBS from North Bengal Medical College in Siliguri, West Bengal, and an MD from Government Medical College, Patiala, Punjab, in 2004. He began his clinical career the same year as a Senior Resident Doctor at Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital in Delhi, and later added executive credentials as a "Healthcare Delivery Expert" from Harvard Business School, with additional executive education associated with INSEAD and the University of Heidelberg.
His entrepreneurial track record centers on rethinking how hospitals and clinics are built and operated. In 2008 he co-founded Altius Healthcare, where he developed an "asset-light" model for running hospitals with minimal capital expenditure. From 2012 to 2018 he founded and ran Cygnus Hospitals, growing it into a chain serving Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities in India. In 2018 he co-founded Meddo Health alongside Saurabh Kochhar (former Foodpanda CEO) and Himanshu Ratnoo, with the aim of organizing India's fragmented outpatient/ambulatory care market through a network of standardized, full-service medical centers; the Meddo group also spans products such as Doxper and UNCOVER.
Beyond his operating companies, Nishchal founded and chairs Voice of Healthcare (VOH), a healthcare-industry platform he launched in 2016 to connect clinicians, policy experts, technologists, and innovators across the Indian healthcare ecosystem; he later added VOH Incubator (founded 2023) to support early-stage healthcare ventures. He represents India as an Ambassador to the European Innovation Academy, is an Aspire Circle fellow, and actively mentors healthcare entrepreneurs in India and abroad.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests as an operator-angel at the seed stage, drawing on his own experience building and running hospitals and outpatient networks.
- Focus areas skew to his domain expertise: healthcare delivery, HealthTech, and consumer businesses in India.
- Tends to back founder-led, early ventures — his known deal was a small angel syndicate ticket rather than a large solo check.
- His broader "thesis" is expressed through Voice of Healthcare and the VOH Incubator: catalyzing transformation in Indian healthcare by bridging clinicians, policy, and technology — a lens that plausibly informs what he chooses to back.
Notable Investments
- Dawailelo — Varanasi-based healthcare platform connecting patients with medical stores, doctors, and pathology labs. Nishchal participated (alongside angel Madhu Gopinath) in its ~$52,000 seed round on Feb 5, 2016, while serving as a director at Cygnus Medicare. The company was later acquired by Sequoia-backed online pharmacy 1mg.
