Background

Neal Edwin Nakagiri was born May 1, 1954, and grew up in the Burbank, California area, graduating from Burbank High School in 1972. He earned a Bachelor of Arts from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and a Juris Doctor from Loyola Law School, Los Angeles. He entered the securities industry in 1981 and spent roughly four decades in retail brokerage and financial advisory work.

Over his career he was registered with a series of broker-dealers, including Jefferies & Co., Inc.; Morgan, Olmstead, Kennedy & Gardner, Inc.; W & D Securities, Inc.; Associated Planners Securities Corporation of Nevada; and Associated Securities Corp. In 2006 he became President and managing owner of NPB Financial Group, LLC, a Burbank-based independent broker-dealer, where he also served as CEO and Chief Compliance Officer. At its peak the firm had about 38 representatives and advisers overseeing roughly $1.2 billion in client assets across some 45 states.

Nakagiri was active in industry self-regulation: he served on FINRA's Small Firm Advisory Board (2009) and on the NASD's National Adjudicatory Council (2004–2006), and NPB Financial submitted formal comment letters to FINRA on regulatory notices (e.g., Regulatory Notice 18-08). His BrokerCheck record shows six customer complaints between 1997 and 2021, several concerning suitability and due-diligence around non-traded REITs; a November 2021 dispute settled for $20,000, and an October 2021 claim sought roughly $433,000 in damages, with total customer disputes reported at more than $700,000.

Nakagiri died on February 19, 2022, at age 67. Following his death, NPB Financial Group ceased operating as a going concern; San Diego–based Independent Financial Group (IFG) acquired the firm's advisers in an asset deal that closed in July 2022 and was reported publicly that September.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • No angel/venture thesis found. Available sources describe a retail securities and advisory practice, not startup investing. The stub's "Angel Investor / Seed Round" framing appears to be a mis-classification, likely from matching the `npbfg.com` email domain.
  • NPB Financial Group's business centered on retail brokerage and financial planning, distributing mutual funds, securities, and alternative investments including non-traded REITs to individual clients.
  • The firm operated as a small independent broker-dealer serving clients across ~45 U.S. states, with a compliance-forward posture reflected in Nakagiri's regulatory-body service (FINRA Small Firm Advisory Board; NASD National Adjudicatory Council).

Notable Investments

  • No startup or portfolio-company investments could be verified. As a broker-dealer principal rather than an angel investor, Nakagiri does not appear to have a venture portfolio in public sources.
  • The most-documented investment activity associated with him is the sale of non-traded REIT products to retail clients through NPB Financial Group — the subject of multiple customer complaints rather than an investment track record.
