Background
Dr. Neil McMahon is a co-founder and Managing Partner of Kimmeridge, the energy-focused alternative asset manager he launched in 2012 alongside Ben Dell and Henry Makansi. At the firm he is responsible for investments in the Rockies region of the US and Canada, the Middle East, and other international opportunities, and he helped build Kimmeridge's geological research and asset-screening capabilities. Kimmeridge runs a differentiated model for energy private equity — a fully-staffed, in-house operating team across upstream disciplines that directly identifies, develops and monetizes assets — alongside an engagement (activist) strategy in public energy companies.
Before founding Kimmeridge, McMahon was a Senior Equity Research Analyst covering Global Integrated Oils at Sanford C. Bernstein, which he joined in 2002. He covered 18 of the largest integrated oil and refining companies and was ranked first three times in the Institutional Investor Research Survey. Prior to Bernstein, he was an Engagement Manager at McKinsey & Company from 1999, based in Houston and London, advising petroleum, electric-power and natural-gas clients.
Earlier in his career, McMahon worked in the oil industry as a geoscientist with British Petroleum (BP) and British Gas (BG), and then moved into consulting with Arthur D. Little, where he became a manager in its Global Energy Practice. He holds an honours degree in Geology and Geophysics from the University of Edinburgh and completed a BP-sponsored Ph.D. there in 1995, and has published multiple technical and management papers in oil and gas journals.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests exclusively in energy, favoring unconventional US oil & gas assets at the front end of the cost curve — low-cost, high-return resource that can be developed and monetized directly by an in-house operating team.
- Backs the build-out of an integrated natural gas + LNG business — a strategy Kimmeridge describes as novel for private equity — tying upstream gas production directly to export offtake ("well to water").
- Runs a parallel public-markets engagement/activist strategy, taking stakes in listed E&P companies to push for better governance, capital allocation, consolidation and ESG frameworks.
- Bullish, long-horizon view on hydrocarbons: in a February 2025 PE Hub interview headlined *"Demand for energy is only increasing,"* McMahon framed continued global energy demand (including AI/data-center power load) as the backdrop for Kimmeridge's gas thesis.
- Also invests across the energy transition — community solar, distributed generation, battery storage and nature-based carbon sequestration — as adjacencies to the core fossil-fuel portfolio.
Notable Investments
- Commonwealth LNG — 9.5 mtpa LNG export terminal near Cameron, Louisiana; Kimmeridge took an equity stake and agreed to a 20-year LNG offtake (targeted start ~2027).
- Caturus (formerly Kimmeridge Texas Gas) — the integrated "well-to-water" natural-gas + LNG platform combining Kimmeridge's upstream gas operations with Commonwealth LNG; in 2025 it closed a strategic equity investment from Mubadala Energy (24.1% stake) and rebranded as Caturus.
- Civitas Resources — formed in the DJ Basin as "Colorado's first carbon-neutral energy producer."
- Sitio Royalties — minerals and royalty interests across the Permian and other US basins.
- Lithos Resources — upstream operator in the northern Midland Basin.
- Titan Exploration — oil & gas development in Wyoming's Powder River Basin.
- Callon Petroleum — engagement/structured investment (2L, equity and royalty); Kimmeridge cited equity value rising roughly 10x.
- Ovintiv — activist engagement that added a board member, changed the CEO, and revised capital-allocation and ESG frameworks.
- PDC Energy — engaged and the company was subsequently sold to Chevron.
- SilverBow Resources — built a ~14.7% stake and launched a 2024 proxy campaign; contest ended when SilverBow agreed to a $2.1B sale to Crescent Energy.
- Energy-transition holdings — 38 Degrees North (distributed generation/community solar), SYSO Technologies (renewable asset operations), Chestnut (nature-based carbon sequestration).
