Background

Neil Anthony Roberts has worked in the asset-finance and equipment-leasing industry since 1972. Over his career he has held senior positions across the United Kingdom, Italy, Germany and the United States, including the managing directorships of three international finance companies owned respectively by Chemical Bank of New York (now J.P. Morgan Chase), HSBC, and Kleinwort Benson. This gives him roughly five decades of cross-border experience in structured, collateral-backed lending and leasing.

In 1996 Roberts acquired a 50% interest in, and became chairman of, ICON Capital Corp, a US equipment-leasing fund manager. Following the sale of Summit's interest in ICON, he co-founded SQN Capital Management, LLC in 2007, building it into a multinational alternative investment manager headquartered at 100 Wall Street in New York. SQN specialises in "collateralised, non-correlated, income-producing investments" — principally financing capital-intensive assets and equipment, together with public-fund management and fund-advisory services.

Roberts serves as Chairman of SQN Capital Management and as Managing Director of SQN Capital Management (UK) Limited, which acts as the investment advisor to the SQN Asset Finance Income Fund Limited — the group's flagship fund, historically traded on the London Stock Exchange under the tickers SQN and SQNX. He is therefore best understood as an alternative-credit and asset-finance principal rather than a startup equity investor.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Invests through collateralised, non-correlated, income-producing structures — i.e., financing backed by physical assets and equipment, not unsecured early-stage equity.
  • Emphasis on asset finance and equipment leasing across capital-intensive industries, historically with transaction sizes up to ~$50m / £50m.
  • Seeks predictable, contracted cash flows (leases, secured income streams) rather than the high-variance, growth-equity return profile typical of angel/seed investing.
  • Cross-border orientation (US, UK, Europe), reflecting Roberts's career running finance companies for Chemical Bank, HSBC and Kleinwort Benson.
  • Note: the affiliated SQN Venture Partners vehicle extends this "asset/credit" philosophy into venture debt for startups (BioTech, energy, enterprise software) — but that is a distinct, separately controlled firm and not Roberts's personal deal flow.

Notable Investments

  • SQN Asset Finance Income Fund Limited (LSE: SQN / SQNX) — flagship listed fund advised by SQN Capital Management (UK); invests in a diversified portfolio of business-critical, income-producing equipment and asset-finance assets.
  • ICON Capital Corp — US equipment-leasing fund manager; Roberts acquired 50% and was chairman from 1996 until the interest was sold, seeding the founding of SQN.
  • SQN Secured Income Fund — a further SQN-managed vehicle in the secured-income space (SQN appointed a dedicated MD for it).
